"Black children are the proxy for what ails American education in general, and so, as we fashion solutions which help black children, we fashion solutions which help all children."What does the quote say to you? What does it mean? Why does it matter or how have you experienced this as a teacher? by Latosha R. Guy

The first sentence is profound, "Black Children are the proxy for what ails American education." wow. When I work with educators and discuss what it means to be equitable - that is going to be part of my conversation.

This quote reminds us of how Black children are some of the most vulnerable people in our society, and often face low quality schooling due to inequitable social factors. If we implement solutions to specifically help them, others will also reap the benefits. This pushes me to consider how I can best uplift my Black students at K/D, which will help all of my other students too.

"Proxy" caught my attention. I didn't know what it meant. But it means representative. Black children are the reps for solution-oriented approaches to invigorating and innovative education. To me, this quote matters because it mirrors what Ladson-Billings says about CR education. It was designed for Black students, but it is overall good teaching.

By looking at our black student population and identifying issues they face, we are able to figure out a solution that can apply to all students. For example, in the Black Student Achievement Surveys, if we find that students don't feel included in classroom lessons, then we need to talk a look and see if our lessons are culturally inclusive. By addressing that concern, it benefits all students.

I am not fond of this quote because it makes it seem like all Black kids are struggling and are the measure for intervention. However, I do understand and accept that if we cultivate strategies in our classes intended to engage our Black student population, all students in the class will benefit.
