Some similarities in the Afghanistan part of the movie was that when you stepped into the 13th century which was similar to Marco Polo because he lived in the 13th Century. A difference between the explorations were that there were different noises that meant different things. While there might have been codes and noises to tell someone something in Polo's time, there probably weren't guns behind that code.

Like Afghanistan, there were many similarities with old Iran and 1995 Iran. The two are similar because like the 2 explorers, Marco Polo was stuck in Iran for a long time. Even with the similarities, there were some differences with the explorations. One difference is that Marco Polo wasn't held up as long as the 2 travelers to travel along and the people moved more freely. In the movie, the two of them were stopped for a longer time until they got their visas to travel.

The differences between the two travelers and Marco Polo was that in Marco Polo's time, there were more camels because there were more travelers, while the 2 recent travelers were looked at weirdly by locals because there weren't nearly as many travelers as before. The similarities are that both the travelers and Marco Polo prepared in Kashgar for the rest of their journey.

The differences is that people don't trust sea dwellers or people who travelled by sea recently but I don't know about Marco Polo's time.
