Which of the Ten Ethical Computing Guidelines do you think students violate most often?

There are two commandments that I believe students violate more often than the others, which are.... "Thou shalt not copy or use proprietary software for which you have not paid.” Many students download pirated software, games, movies, or music because they may not have the money and it has become so normalized that people don't really think of it as stealing.

The second one I believe that students violate a lot is “Thou shalt not appropriate other people’s intellectual output.”

This happens with plagiarism especially in more recent years with the creation and use of artificial intelligence

Why do you think these violations occur?

These violations often happen not because students intend to be unethical, but because it feels easy, common, and sometimes necessary when students are required to get a lot done with a limited amount of time.

What do you think could be done to reduce or eliminate such unethical behavior?

Unethical computer behaviors among students can be reduced through education, clear rules, and better resources. Many violations happen because students don’t fully understand the consequences or see them as harmless. Schools can address this by teaching digital ethics in a practical way, and explaining how these actions affect others. When expectations and consequences are clearly explained and consistently enforced, students are more likely to take responsibility for their actions.

Another key step is making ethical choices more accessible. Students often resort to shortcuts because of cost. Providing free or discounted software, tools for proper citation, and guidance on how to avoid plagiarism gives them options.
