When I was reading the fighting scene, I kept thinking it was a dream that Piddy was having. I was really angry reading about how people were driving by watching her be attacked, and the neighbor just sat there too and didn't do anything!

I love that this book had a happy ending with Piddy being able to transfer, and eventually go to the Magnet school the year after, but that's not how it usually goes in real life. Students don't often get the fairy-tale ending that Piddy got.

Social Media is a modern day monster for students. Everything they post is a permanent record. Students feel validated or rebuffed based on the reactions (likes, etc.) they receive. As teachers, we can model positive interaction on social media such as in Discussion posts on Schoology, which also offers a chance for students to like others' posts.

I was so sad for Piddy when I realized how far away she had come from her "old self" that danced without being self-conscious, that had a friend to laugh and be herself with. Being bullied stole her joy and her ability to learn in a safe place.

Despite the book's title, by this point in the book I simply thought that Yaqui might be a rather faceless threat and wouldn't actually jump Piddy when she did. I connected with the character and simply didn't want her to deal with yet another conflict or struggle at this point. Everything about that scene was so very sad and completely void of hope.

I was horrified not so much by the attack itself, but by the video that was posted after. This seems too close to home with a lot of what the kids today are dealing with. It was bad enough that Piddy was jumped by Yacqui and her followers, but to have it posted? It was like an attack that never ended. I was also horrified that people were too afraid to help, that they "didn't want to get involved."

Social Media is definitely a modern day monster. The main thing that I think of is how young girls are obsessed with influencers. They don't realize that it is all smoke and mirrors.

These days in addition to "traditional bullying" kids are subject to so many forms of social media that influence how they think about themselves and how they view others perceive them. They focus on how many "likes" and "followers" they have. Often hiding behind the keyboard brings out the worst in others making highly critical comments for individuals and their friends to see.

I've really been struggling with what it means to be an American over the last few years. When our government isn't doing enough to protect its citizens, what is it worth? How can we call our country a democracy when elected officials are purposefully disenfranchising voters? How can we think of ourselves as a "first-world" nation when Flint has had poisoned water for YEARS?
