I think if Atticus was narrating the book would be very interesting because, It would show us his thoughts on raising 2 kids while the whole town is against him in the terrible time and place. It would also be very interesting to see what was going through his mind in the trial and why he took the case in the first place. Lastly, it would be so cool to finally realize why he didn't tell his kids about all the talents he had like being the best shot in the county. He'd rather have his kids be ashamed of him than be proud? I'd like to finally know the reasoning to all these questions.

"Cecil Jacobs had made me forget. He had announced in the schoolyard the day before that Scout Finch's daddy defend *******. I denied it, but told Jem."

This is the moment when Scout and Jem found out that their dad, Atticus was defending ******* and in this time and place it was not very common and also frowned upon to do this. Scout and Jem were tormented many times throughout the book because of this and even their family didn't respect Atticus's opinion.

This chapter is important because, Scout and Jem finding this out about their dad was a big conflict in the book and Scout again and again got negative comments by many people and this made Scout not as proud of her father. Harper Lee included this in the book because she's telling the reader that you don't have to agree or do what everyone else is doing and that it's ok to be different. Harper Lee is expressing to the reader to be proud of what you believe in and that sometimes people won't agree with you and will try to destroy your spirit, you just have to be stronger than them.

They originally thought that it was some kids hiding things, “It must be some little kid’s place—hides his things from the bigger folks. You know it’s only when school’s in that we’ve found things.¨ So they were going to leave whatever was in the hole there for a couple of days to see if someone else took it or claimed it. When they eventually took it they moved on to having new objects there. Each time they went there was a new object. ¨Jem and I were trotting in our orbit one mild October
afternoon when our knot-hole stopped us again.

"Mrs. Dubose lived alone except for a Negro girl in constant attendance, two doors up the street from us in a house with steep front steps and a dog-trot hall. She was very old; she spent most of each day in bed and the rest of it in a wheelchair. Jem and I hated her... We had long ago given up the idea of walking past her house on the opposite side of the street; that only made her raise her voice and let the whole neighborhood in on it. We could do nothing to please her. If I said as sunnily as I could, “Hey, Mrs. Dubose,” I would receive for an answer, “Don’t you say hey to me, you ugly girl! You say good afternoon, Mrs. Dubose!”

This is where we are officially announced to Mrs. Dubose and right off the bat, Scout and Jem don't like her because of her rude temper towards the kids. This affected Jem and Scout so much to the point where they avoided walking past her house and in return, Mrs. Dubose was even ruder to them. The three had a spat one day of which lead to Jem having to read to Mrs. Dubose for 2 hours a day. Jem and Scout didn't realize it, but Mrs. Dubose was dying from the affects of morphine because of her being so addicted to it. What Mrs. Dubose's solution was that when Jem came to read to her, she would set her alarm a little father everyday because that would be the time period where she would take no morphine and was determined to die without her being addicted to it anymore. This explained her hair triggered temper towards people because of her not being in the right state of mind. While Scout found this heart warming from her father telling her this, Jem refused to budge, saying that she was still an "old-hell-devil".

I think what Harper Lee is trying to take from this chapter that you shouldn't judge a book from it's cover until you've read it through and you understand why this person acts the way that they do and what you could do that could help them in the long run. Mrs. Dubose probably in the past was most likely not a bad person before she got addicted to morphine and became more and more out of touch from what she was saying as the effects of morphine regressed her well-being. I find it very brave of her that in her final days that she wanted to "die free" of the pain that morphine caused her and this chapter could also encourage others to quit drugs who feel like they have no way out.

In chapter 1 there is a girl who is named Jean Louise Finch who was always called by, Scout. A quote is "When they are talking to Boo Radley and trying to get him to come out of his house." 9. "I hope you've go it though your head that he'll killed us each and every one, Dill Harris." 13 This shows how they are afraid of Boo Radley and how there intimated by him. " Yeah, that's all, said Dill." " He'll probably come out after you when he sees you in the yard, then Scout'n' me'll jump on him and hold him down till we can tell him we ain't gonna hurt him" 15 This also showed me how the kids are ruthless and are willing to out themselves in dangerous situations just to find out the misery of Boo Radley. It's important because this chapter set up Boo Radleys character and additionally started the attempt to figure out who Boo Radley is.

During this chapter Scout went to her first day of school. She was very excited but her cruel teacher Miss ruined it for her. When the teacher and Scout were talking about learning how to read at home, Scout said, " He hasn't taught me anything, Miss Caroline." (17 on PDF.) Scout was referring to Atticus not teaching her how to read at home. I was surprised to see that the teacher was expecting her to learn at home like that. Scout then began to explain that Jem thought she taught herself to read. The teacher then gets irritated. "Lets not let our imaginations run away with us dear." said Miss Caroline (17 on PDF) This was a surprising quote to me because teachers are supposed to be people that will help you learn and answer your questions. Especially when you are in elementary school your supposed to run away with your imagination. As the chapter goes on, Miss Caroline asks the students who is staying for lunch and who is going home. She notices that a student named Walter Cunningham is staying at school but doesn't have a lunch. Miss Caroline offers him a quarter to buy lunch downtown. Walter says, "“Nome thank you ma’am,” (20 PDF) The Cunningham's were hit hard from the Great Depression. But, Walter would not accept it. This showed Scout how people struggled during the tough times during the Great Depression. I think Harper Lee included this in her chapter so the readers could understand what it was like to live during the Great Depression. In addition, she showed the cruelness of Miss Caroline to show the readers what environment school was like during the time period.

During chapter 6 of the book, it was a chapter where the children wanted to explore things about the Radley’s Place. They went to the window as well as behind the house to try and see if they could see Boo Radley.

"Wordlessly, he held up his pants. He lay down, and for a while I heard his cot trembling."
This quote was read at the end of chapter 6 after Jem, Dill, and Scout had gone to the Radley Place to try and look for Boo Radley. That was when they saw his shadow and ran home however, Jem left him pants in the barbed wire because of his frightening. Jem knew that he was either going to have to get his pants back or have to deal with the punishment the next morning when they were found so he decided to go after them. But, when he got home, something grabbed his attention and caused him to shake in his bed the second he got back to his house. This is an example of Harper Lee explaining foreshadowing to the readers on what could have caused Jem to be so scared when he got back home.

“Give you a hand up,” he muttered to Dill. “Wait, though.” Jem grabbed his left wrist and my right wrist, I grabbed my left wrist and Jem’s right wrist, we crouched, and Dill sat on our saddle. We raised him and he caught the window sill. “Hurry,” Jem whispered, “we can’t last much longer.” Dill punched my shoulder, and we lowered him to the ground. “What’d you see?” (53PDF)

This quote stood out because they will do whatever it takes to try to see Boo Radley. For example when they were trying to find Boo in this last chapter they almost got shot. If Jem and Scout never decided to go up to the window and try to find Boo, would they ever stop trying?
What I think Harper Lee is trying to tell the reader in this chapter is that the kids were not thinking and they did not let their judgement play a role in their decision making.

After Jem and Scout stop arguing Jem invites him over for diner. When they got home Jem ran to the kitchen and asked Calpurnia to set an extra plate on the table. Atticus greeted Walter and began to talk to him about crops on the farm witch Jem and Scout could not understand what they were talking about showing that they have very different lives. Back at school tomorrow and Miss Caroline was standing in the middle of the room scared for her life and screamed "its alive" and all the boys in the classroom stood up to help the teacher the teacher pointed to were it was and didn't point to the floor but to a student there were bugs in his hair and they said it was normal because he has cooties. because of this the teacher forced him to go home and watch his hair.
