In this movie different students are profiled because of their completely different realities. Although the students come from different backgrounds, they have similar experiences. The teacher allows the students to write their realities in a journal creating a safe space for the students to be honest with themselves and each other. They connect with each other by sharing similar experiences within different realities. Because the teacher felt uncomfortable in his situation, he used this awful approach to try to relate to his students. Like Christopher Edmin in For White Folks Who Teach In the Hood, he did not distinguish the difference between him and his students. This man in the interview did not consider the ethnic and cultural meaning behind the word nigga and in turn did not care about why the black students felt they could say the term and he could not.

He realizes that the students see the world differently and he uses this to connect algebra to the students. Once he changes his approach to a nontraditional way of teaching the students are able to make connections and understand the algebra. When the teacher was going to be reprimanded, the students not only felt responsible for their learning in the classroom but also the teacher.Although It was not easy for the students to unite and stand against the dean, the students remained committed to their classroom. The students in the movie have a commonality with the student in Christopher Edmin's class. It must have been difficult to turn down a trip with her estranged father but because she felt responsible for her peers, she felt she could not leave them hanging.

Yet, they do not take in consideration how many black families are single family homes. Mass incarceration of black men create a domino effect of negative outcomes. 1 in 9 black children have a parent in jail. A single parent has to worry about a lot more than a family growing up in a multi-generational family home. There is not enough attention to go around.
