Jacob Riis changed the lives of families living in poverty by showing the wealthy class a glimpse of what was life like for them and intended to influence them to help change the tenements. I believe he decided to publish these photos because it showed how cramped rooms were and how many people actually had to live, eat, sleep in these small rooms and buildings. What life was like for children and what they would do, they barely had anything to play with. He wanted to show how people lived in and that, that needed to change.

The photographer Jacob riis promoted social reform through his photographs of the poorest neighborhoods of New York, making known to the other class of social life the services of these people in the way they lived, families in a small place, unprotected children , and some families working at home, immigrants living in a small apartment. Through these photographs he showed these sad stories of these people
to people of a high social class.
