Due to the vast majority of my students either working asynchronously or not logging in at all, I had an in-depth conversation with a student and his mother (with the help of a translator) about his lack of effort and negative behavioral patterns he experienced last year at the school and currently in my ELA class via virtual learning. He told his mother that we started school today, but 8th graders in our bulding don't start coming to the building and learning face-to-face until October 12th, 2020.

I let his mother know (through the interpreter) what is expected from the student in my class and how I will help him become successful, but in order for that to happen, he will need to put in 100% effort. Currently, he is putting myabe 10% and that's being generous. I also stated the rules of the school especially during this pandemic and how the administration is not going to put up with antics that could endanger others and before that could happen, he will be sent home to learn virtually. Note: the student doesn't like the virtual method of learning.

When speaking to the student and attempting to get him to participate and express himself, when I ask him questions about the work, himself, 98% of the time he will verbally tell me "I don't know" or on assignments write "IDK"
This student is one of the main reasons why this workshop intrigues me. If I can build better classroom conversations where he is participating, then I know I'm on the fast track to success!

I can tell Mom is at wits end with her son, because this has been a pattern of his for a long time. Her husband is out of town working a lot, so she has to the lion's share of working and raising my student and his other siblings. As I talk to my student as well as letting her know, I will do all that I can to help her son succeed and be prepared for high school, she is very happy to see someone taking interests in her son.

Can This Method Be Successful With My Students?

Probably the most challenging thing I may experience using the mothods learned in class, will be if I can successfully reach the most difficult student and have them open up and participate in class, I really enjoyed learning about the power of conversation and how important it is in the overall academic as well as social & emotional learning standards that my students must master in order to be successful at the next level. This is a great tool and will be beneficial to me and my students as a whole!
