The Trial of Martha Carrier portrays the process and the lengths people go to, to single out others in their community. We see this when Toothaker confesses that “[Martha Carrier] Would clap her hands at him” As a result of this he “Lost cattle, by strange deaths.” He does this as he is making a confession statement that Martha Carrier is in fact a witch. Meanwhile as a reader we know this to be untrue as events like losing cattle for the fact that someone clapped are impossible. What this shows is the blaming of women for the problems within communities. At the time people like this would be prosecuted as they were utterly defenseless in courts, and people were afraid to side with the accused.

Arthur Miller's The Crucible, an allegory to 1950’s America provides a view of how institutions set up to protect citizens often fail, resulting in harm to members of society. We see this when Reverend Parris claims that a witness confession was a “Clear attack upon the court.” (Miller,94) By doing this, Parris attempts to delegitimize the witness testimony as it does not fall within his personal agenda. In response to this Reverned Hale questions him by asking “Is every defense an attack upon this court.” This qoute clearly makes a refrence to the red scare during 1950’s America, As similarly in booth events courts abused their powers, taking rights away from inncoent people.

Vox’s article A Political history of the term “Witch Hunt '' Portrays a full view of the word witch hunt while also providing new insight how the word has changed to fit into American politics of today. Although some aspects of the word witch hunt are similar to what they once were, the text explains how “Trump inverts the typical gender power dynamic we associate with the witch hunt.”(Erin Cassese) This has resulted in men, attempting to “rally” against women as they are seen as the leaders of this hunting. Although most of the population disagrees with president Trump's opinion it has changed the world forever and subconsciously made Americans think about whose hands the power is within. Drawing close comparisons to the red scare and the witch trials of Salem.

Although in America there may be no more literal hunts for witches, that does not mean aspects of what they once were do not exist today. As with the growth of social media and everyday a greater blame for the lowest members of society events like this will only become more common.
