One of my first memories of Dave was in my interview and just thinking "This guy might be the kindest human I've ever met." And every time I'm in the car with my kids, I remember Dave's baby shower advice on the value of car time - "That is the time to solve all the problems of the world, when they're in the car..." and it reminds us not to lose that time to the radio, screens, etc. Dave, you will be missed so much around here - thank you for everything you have taught us!

Having the honor of working with Dave for the last 13 years, I have learned from him a few pearls of wisdom:

1.) If your pants don't fit... buy bigger pants, there's no sense in worrying about it. This seems to be a universal truth - don't worry about the small stuff - just find a reasonable solution and move on.

2.) Do what is best for kids. If you know it's the right thing to do for kids, just do it. Don't worry about how others will perceive it. Trust your gut and do what's best.

3.) Wear comfy shoes.

4.) Be willing to learn something new. It may be uncomfortable and frustrating at times, but if you ask for help and build a good community around you, you will be a better teacher for it!

And lastly, (not teaching related) be a good parent. Listen to your kids, let them make mistakes, but always, always, always tell them how much you love them.

Your calm demeanor and gentle presence have made my days better, and I truly appreciate all the kindness, laughs, and support you have given me over the years.

Dave, you're an outstanding person, teacher, father, coach, and mentor. Just an upstanding guy with lots of life experiences and words of wisdom. The six years I worked with you were filled with laughter and good advice. I learned a lot from you, from content to life lessons. I remember so many things and so many stories, everything from Jeremiah eating his wrestling helmet, you working on Frank Thomas’s house, suggestions you gave me about teaching and life, and even about adapting instructional practices as I get older. No offense to several great teachers there, but you were definitely somebody I missed talking to about parenting and life after I left. Best wishes in the future!

You were a mentor, friend, and patient voice of reason for someone who really needed it in a lot of ways. There are endless stories, laughs, and memories made within the two years we worked together, but this is probably not the best place to discuss them. I hope we get the opportunity to get together and reminisce as you wind down an outstanding career. SWEATHOGS FOREVER!

All the best.

Marco

Hey Dave, I'm not sure this space can do justice about what you have meant to me and everyone at MV & IPSD 204, but I think you know!! It will definitely be quiet next year (and years after) in D211 and on the apush team without you. But as the General says, "Life moves on" and you will be moving on to a great new stage in your life. The best thing is that we will continue to get together on Fridays and at other times, so it is not goodbye but just so long at MV for us! You are the best, Scott

Being able to open Metea Valley with Dave so early in my career was a blessing as I got to see what a true teacher who believed in building relationships with students is all about. I will never forget sitting at Indian Plains and trying to get our original SS staff over the rope Don set up, but from that early onset I saw a mentor and role model for how to truly educate students. Dave, I am grateful for the morning conversations we have had over the years as we both get to MV bright and early. The jokes, the serious talks, and the passion for teaching are all things I will take with me as you walk out of MV. Your support for the MV soccer programs is evident by your constant invite to our teacher appreciation games. Thank you for just being you and setting a path for all of at MV. Enjoy retirement, feel free to come back early and talk to Heather and I before school, and good luck!

Luedtke – Congratulations on your upcoming retirement! Whether it’s back to the days when you were coaching the Warriors at WV, the year we spent together at Granger (‘05-‘06), the years here at Metea as Mustangs or just three years ago when we were standing together on opening day celebrating milestones -my 25 years and your 30 years, you have always been a positive example for all of us. I remember saying to you as we stood in front of the Auditorium stage- just three more and you smiled. I knew you would make the next and final three just as great as the first thirty. While you may not remember this, I have a key memory from my time with the Grizzlies. During the year I spent at Granger, we had a handful of extra meetings and a lot of additional work as that was the year 8th grade graduation changed to promotion ceremonies. Emotions among many were high and I vividly recall sitting in a room with an upset team. I was doing my best to reassure them, and I looked at you with a ‘please save me’ expression. You jumped in and your calming voice paired with your level-headed guidance, regained their focus. You told them it was all going to work out and we moved forward. And, 18 years later, you were exactly right- it all worked out quite well. Your team, then and now, respects you and very much values your opinion and advice. Your kindness, thoughtfulness, easy-going demeanor, and genuine care for colleagues and students has been a gift to all of us. I am better, as are countless others, for having worked with and known you. As you are relaxing, take a moment occasionally, to think of all of us on Sunday nights– ha! Live it up and enjoy your friends and family, you’ve earned it! I wish you all the best in your retirement. You are one of the good ones, Luedtke!

Congrat’s again,

Jader

Dave has been absolutely amazing to work with over my six years at Metea. He ALWAYS had something funny to say or encouraging words for you if he could tell you were struggling. Over this past school year, as Dave joined our United States History team, he consistently went out of his way to praise the work we were doing as a team and consistently reminded myself that it is essential to remind people of the good they are doing. It means a lot.

In addition, Dave's four keys to being a successful teacher have been on my mind throughout this school year:

Find your allies.

Ask questions

Work hard

Laugh everyday

In all honesty, these are the keys to just living a fulfilling life.

Dave, thanks for everything! You truly have been an absolute force to work with! We will miss you here at Metea Valley more than you will truly know.

Mr Luedtke, congratulations on such an amazing and well earned accomplishment. There is no doubt in my mind that you have changed the lives of so many young men & women, including myself. I’m beyond excited for your next steps and the journey that you are going to embark on in your new & near future. Although I never had you as a teacher in school, I was blessed to be able to have you as a teacher & mentor in my everyday life. The amount of lessons I learned just listening to you on the porch, at the fixer house, and after football games are memories and lessons that I will pass on to my family for years to come. However, the lesson I remember teaching you that I don’t believe you’ll soon forget is that the spice cabinet always goes on the left side of the stove for easy access when cooking…

With love,

Sammy S

Dave,

Congrats on your retirement. How time flies. When I started at Granger you were one of the first people to welcome me. It has been a joy and pleasure getting to know you over the years. We all have benefited from working with you. Having the opportunity to see you in action the year we shared a room was amazing. Then finding out we both have a love for South Haven. Enjoy your well deserved retirement. Thank you for everything.

Dwight N.

Governor Luedtke

You've been such a great example to me over the 9 years I've been at MV. Those first few years being part of US History team were great. You always had great ideas to share and it was evident how passionate for teaching and the students you have been throughout your career. I will not get used to your retirement, it will feel a little bit emptier at MV without you. You've earned this and I hope retirement treats you well.

Slager
