You will have workplace placement in an Early Learning and Childcare setting or in Primary 1 or 2 in a school.

Placement gives you the opportunity to apply your learning in practice while gathering evidence required to achieve the workplace units.

Placement will be on a Tuesday

You will also have three 'block placement' weeks.

In these weeks you will go to placement instead of attending classes in college.
These weeks give you the opportunity to really get to know the setting, the children and your staff team while applying your learning and gathering evidence.

What activities and experiences will I take part in during my course?

During your NC Course, staff arrange visits to a range of different places that often include visiting the Scottish Parliament, Jupiter Artland, and having guest speakers coming in form Early Learning and Childcare settings, and Upstart Scotland. We also take part in a lot of outdoor learning experiences, which are fun, relaxing, and aid you in supporting children's outdoor play confidently.

After completing the NC Childhood Practice SCQF level 6 you could gain employment and register with the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) as a Support Worker in an Early Education and Childcare setting, or you may decide to apply for our HNC Childhood Practice which will enable you to work and register as a Practitioner with the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC). Please note to progress onto the HNC Childhood Practice, you will need to have a passed your Communication unit at SCQF level 6, and your NC Childhood Practice Group Award, or have at least 2 Higher passes, one being English.

We will be doing a lot of outdoor learning on your course. We recommend you have some sturdy shoes or wellies and warm socks so you can participate and enjoy these activities that are an essential part of working with children. You can often find these in local charity shops.

The standard college day is 9am to 4.30 pm

Twelve hours of class contact per week
This is normally delivered over two days per week
One full day at work placement (three days in total)
Monday and Wednesday in college, Tuesday on placement (subject to change)
We recommend at least an additional four hours per week of self-study
