Books vs. Not-Books

"If you want children to love reading... make sure they have real books in their hands."
The author suggests using books that are exciting, fun and entertaining for students, rather than using photocopied, stapled packets. Another option is allowing the students to read using etexts or a variety of reading apps. Not only should students enjoy what they read, but also be in a comfortable reading environment. Both pleasure and purposeful reading are also central ideas to making kids love reading.

Reading vs. Worksheets

"If you want your kids to love reading...balance written responses with plenty of time to just enjoy their books."
Minkel recommends giving students time to spend truly reading instead of mindlessly filling out worksheets. Reading centers should be purposeful and engaging. Related to this is the idea of depth vs. frequency, where the article states that making time for a meaningful session is much better than rushing through centers and being interrupted by a timer.

"If you want them to love reading... make it a conversation"
The article mentions a study that found engaging students in conversation is correlated with strength in reading. Its important that we as teachers spend a lot of time having class discussions about the story they are reading.
