SAYGRACE's song represents the conflict that women face when they fall to the control of a man. This song was originally written by Lesley Gore in 1963 describing the struggles of overcoming this conflict and finding ones own individuality. This version of the song puts a modern twist to ideas that were prevalent during this time. It also represents how these ideas are still occurring in today's society, even though these movements began several decades ago. The artist expresses the liberating feelings of being able to make your own choices and to be your own person. The idea that one does not rely on their significant other and that all women are self suficent is a growing concept that is beginning to change within this current era.

The representation of having your own self confidence and the means in order to uplift and fight for oneself is one of the main ideas that author Maya Angelou exhibited. Within the poem the author represents how ones self esteem will allow them to perservere through the injustices within daily life. Although the author faces injustices due to her gender and race, the idea of rising to the occasion and fighting against these prejudices is an major idea that is being portrayed. In order to do so, one needs to accept their differences and their qualities and learn to value themselves. One should not have to hide who they are in order to please others. In society all should be accepted for who they are and should fight for the inalienable rights that they are guaranteed.

Within the media and everyday life, the idea of being young and beautiful is a stress that society has caused women to face. Lana Del Rey expresses her concern of maintaining love once a person's beauty is no longer prevalent. This causes people to wonder whether that love will fade once one begins to grow old. Television shows and movies do not help but rather hinder the empowerment of woman by regularly displaying young actors and actresses who would be considered attractive within today's society. The representation of these false ideas as a whole creates unrealistic standards and pressures for women and ultimately lower the self esteem of women who do not fit these standards.

Emily Dickinson expresses the confinement of society and the tight grasp of social orders and laws amongst women during this time. The repression expressed within the poem explains how society often withholds the true thoughts of woman in order to keep them within their grasps. Within the poem Dickinson expresses how society no longer has control over her and that within her own thoughts she is able to break away from social order and is able to express her emotions within her work. The author implies that society is unable to hold her primarily due to the fact that it is unjust. Although this piece was written in 1862 the author releases herself and considers herself of be one with a world that has not yet accepted her as a whole.

Artist Frida Kahlo was best known for constructing self portraits that represent the pain and suffering women have faced within a time where rights were not guaranteed. As a feminist artist, Kahlo vividly challenged social normalities, the idea of physical beauty as well as the power women held within society. Throughout the artists representation, the portrait alludes to restrains that women are held too and the emotional distress society has caused amongst these individuals. The artist portrayed the concept of vulnerability while also juggling ideas of empowerment and self sufficiency. The expressions shown on the faces of the individual challenged common beliefs during this time primarily due to the fact that it was not how woman were commonly portrayed. These ideas expressed the importance of the female body, in acceptance of all body types, while also expressing the importance of the spirit and mind.

Both of these woman took place in the Anti-Slavery Convention in 1840 and are considered to be two strong feminist leaders. The Declaration of Sentiments was read at the Convention and stated the grievances demands in which these woman rightly deserved. These terms contribute to the power male pronouns hold within our society. On the other hand, also shows how pronouns indicated for women do not hold the same power. Examples throughout the article demonstrate the power male pronouns hold over female pronouns and the difficulty some have reading the word she in front of the word president. This complication may indicate whether or not people within our country may be willing to vote for a woman in the next presidential election. There has been a natural progression, which has served as women’s oppression in todays society. Due to the topics discussed within the article, it shows how our country still is in the works of progress and the time it will take in order to do so.

The disregard that our society has for women and how women are viewed in our society largely have to due with the injustices that are present within a woman's everyday life. Author Jane Caro argues that for all the experiences that a woman in society endures, there is only one day a year in which they are celebrated. The disconnection our society holds toward woman and mothers greatly shows where women are held within societal standards. Society has forced women to stay in the shadows when in reality they should be viewed as equals. These views cause woman to be under appreciated and overlooked in times of need and distress. Mothers in particular endure the on going stress of life and due to this constant pressure are influenced to act in a particular fashion. In doing so, mothers are harshly judged and hardly appreciated in society.

Within my piece, woman are forced to wear a mask and are pressured to act a certain way in order to conform to societal norms. The girl represented within the image feels pressured by society to be poised and perfect. Because of these pressures woman feel as if they cannot be themselves and that they are unable to freely act in society. The girl within the image looks in the mirror and although she looking at herself she is unable to truly view her own reflection. This shows how society is blinded but unrealistic standards in which that we have simply conformed to. The ninetenth amendment was ratified on August eighteenth nineteen twenty. This amendment guaranteed woman the right to vote within the United States. Although the passage of this amendment only took a year, this was an ongoing battle that woman had to fight for decades to uphold. Beginning in the eighteen hundreds woman began to picket and petition their thoughts regarding their right to vote. These speakers only began the movement that established an ongoing battle for centuries. Supporters of the suffrage movement often faced with physical abuse and trauma due to the severe tactics of this movement . The resistance to this cause was so severe that often individuals were placed in jail in the command of government officials. In the year nineteen sixteen all major feminist organizations were behind the amendment and in the year nineteen eighteen, President Wilson changed his stance regarding woman's rights which significantly shifted. The following year the House of Representatives approved the amendment and the Senate followed two weeks later. Tennessee was the thirty sixth state to ratify the amendment and was considered to be the the final obstacle that was required for woman too legally be able to vote. The ratification of three fourths of the states was needed in order to ensure the passage of this amendment.

A Girl in America represents a woman's fight in world that is created in the image of men. Within each artifact viewers will observe the push for equality and the difficultly in doing so. Our society is formulated to benefit white males. No individual that falls outside these parameters is considered to live a life in which they are not fighting against societal norms. Women live in the shadows of men and it is considered to be a major conflict has been raising concerns for centuries. Although these predetermined ideas have been challenged, these standards are still an idea that woman are continuously fighting to break away from. Throughout this project ideas regarding the past and present will be represented or order to percieve the progress of this ongoing movement and progressions that leading figures in our society, both past and present, have put forth. By presenting these figures, it will allow viewers to analyze past events, movements, and effects these individuals opened upon the modern world. Throughout my presentation questions will be raised regarding the tasks that are still required in order achieve equality amongst both genders. The incorporation of both historical figures as well as modern-day aspects of the humanities allows viewers to have their own opinions regarding these issues and how they perceive different situations of injustice. When looking at the exhibition, viewers will enter the perspective of a woman living within the United States and how society ultimately expects woman to act according to predetermined societal standards. These standards often make it difficult for a woman to feel as if they can live their life freely. Constantly women are pressured to act a certain way and are simply expected to accept their fate and to conform to what is expected of them. These ideas are slowly changing due to the beginning of these movements and the shift to a society that is more accepting of all. Although change within society has occurred, there are still many steps that are needed in order to fully take action in order to form a more accepting society. In doing so, the aspects that are expected of both men and women will be eliminated or to a point where they are significantly diminished. Hopefully within the near future these aspects are recognized and acted upon.
