What does "information literacy" mean to you?

•Information literacy is not just about finding information, it is to evaluate and see the effectiveness of the information from lots of resources. It is how we use our resources by using the 5 components.

How will you need information literacy skills in the specific industry in which you will work after graduation?

• As a student taking up Business Management, I can see that information literacy is very important to help us analyze data, make decisions based on what we gathered and communicate to others concisely. and can able to build credibility.

Give specific examples ( e.g. as a teacher, a chef, a business manager etc.) of the types of lifelong learning and research you will need to participate in as a successful employee in your specific field ( the program you are studying at Humber College)

• Based on my experience as a Coordinator/Administrative Assistant responsible for budget allocation in various provinces, I believe that lifelong learning and research are crucial in staying updated with financial policies, regulations, and practices that affect the allocation of budgets and resources. This involves attending trainings, seminars, and workshops to learn new budgeting tools and techniques. Communication and time management is also important. I need to communicate with the chiefs of each province to update them on the budget for these municipalities and other organizations, so it is important to work continually on communication skills. Having this kind of work requires a lot of patience and time management. This may involve attending workshops or reading up on time management techniques to find the best strategies for you.

Do you consider yourself to be a high or low-context communicator? Explain why and give a few examples to illustrate your answer.

I consider myself to be a high-context communicator. This is because I grew up in a country where there is a strong emphasis on respect, understanding, and indirect communication. Cultural relationships and harmony are highly valued, and it is important to show respect to elders, superiors, and professionals. We used "Po" and "Opo" to respect the elders, and when we give feedback, we would say, "You're doing great already, but maybe it would be better if you shortened your introduction a bit more," to avoid offending.

In the workplace, different cultures value different benefits. Some are intrinsic (internal) factors and some are extrinsic (external) factors. What specific benefits would motivate employees in your culture? How are they viewed in Canada?

I have worked in the Philippines for three years as a contractual employee in a government agency. During this time, I observed that Filipino culture is strongly family-oriented and places a premium on flexibility in work hours and family support. However, my experience as a contractual employee was challenging due to the lack of benefits and relatively low pay. The work environment was hierarchical and authoritarian, with senior management making decisions without much input from lower-level employees. This lack of openness could stifle creativity, innovation, and open communication. Additionally, there was a significant prevalence of nepotism and favouritism, with family connections and personal relationships influencing hiring, promotions, and other opportunities.

In the Canadian workplace, there is a strong emphasis on egalitarianism, fostering a culture of collaboration and open communication. Strict laws and regulations are in place to prevent discrimination and favouritism, ensuring a level playing field for all employees. Practices such as nepotism or hiring based on personal connections are widely considered unethical and can result in severe legal consequences, including human rights complaints or lawsuits. Unionization rates in Canada vary depending on the industry and region, but unions play a significant role in advocating for workers' rights and addressing workplace issues. Canadian labour laws are designed to protect employees' rights to organize and engage in collective bargaining, providing avenues for them to address concerns about working conditions or unfair treatment in the workplace.

Design choices have ethical implications. Indicate whether you consider each of the following actions ethical, unethical, or a grey area. Which of the actions would you do? Which would you feel uncomfortable doing? Which would you refuse to do, and why?

a. listing the positive points of your message in a bulleted list, while discussing the negatives in a paragraph

Using this kind of approach can highlight the benefits and can easily be understood by the reader. It is a way to illustrate or present information, ensuring quality clarity, emphasizing the positives and still being transparent about the negatives.

This kind may also deliberately make them harder to notice or understand, this can also sound manipulative or misleading.

On the grey area, it depends on how the presentation is and the intention.

b. using a smaller font size to review the limitations of your product/service

There are times that I am using this one, to be more specific and in some contexts; smaller font sizes can be justified with minor details, but it is generally viewed as questionable.

It is seen as unethical because it can make the information less noticeable, hard to read, and can mislead.

c. bolding words/phrases in your resume to draw the reader’s attention toward certain skills and qualifications

This is used to highlight the information needed, it can help to read and draw attention to the most relevant points. This is applied to enhance the clarity and emphasize the strengths.

Sometimes, bolded words can be unethical because they can make the information misleading or exaggerated.

This kind of approach has an advantage and disadvantages, I would do the listing positives in bullet form and negatives in a paragraph to make it clear and transparent, and bolding the skills and qualifications in my resume. I would refuse to use a small font size due to its misleading nature. I feel uneasy using this format if it is intentionally minimizing important drawbacks. If the negatives are significant, presenting them less noticeably could be seen as manipulative and misleading. Transparency and honesty are crucial, and any attempt to obscure important information would make me uncomfortable.
