What is meant by the changing nature and face of the family? Give examples.
Many different definitions of family are used in psychological and social science literature. Which of the following should be considered “family”: (a) a divorced man, his three children, and his elderly mother; (b) a widower, his female partner, and his three children; (c) a widower, his male partner, and his three children; (d) a small, tight-knit group of young adults living on the streets; or (e) three roommates. by Erica Flowers

I believe the nature and face of family is not only those individuals who are biologically family but those who are not "blood related". Family is whoever you trust and comfy in. Each of these families listed have their pros and cons as well as their own charm. Sharing responsibilities, engaging in connections, caring for one another, being there for one another, etc. Demonstrating how psychological, socially, physically and mentally families are bonded together.

Families now are normally thought if as someone or a group of people that have been there for you in tough times and have always shown respect and commitment to you or even your family. I think all of these examples can classify as family as long as there is a shared respect level for each other and the people in each other's lives. Personally, my best friend that I've known for 5 years is the person I'm closest to and while not blood related she's like my sister and the rest of her family quickly became my second family and I know I can go to them with anything and they can do the same with me and my family. While responsibility does play into what a family is; I think that mutual respect for each other is a big part pf responsibility in families. There are cases where blood family doesn't want anything to do with someone of the family but the singled out person winds up finding someone that cares for them and becomes that person's family.

-Emiliana Repreza

Family can be anyone you see emotional ties to. Sometimes people are not just family by blood but by love and friendship. A blood related family is two parents and their children. While an emotionally tied family can be a divorced parents who remarried and they also have their own children from a previous marriage. This would be a family made of emotional connection and close relationships within the household. Family is what you make of it and there is really no one that could say only blood and marriage makes a family.

It doesn't have to be genetic as long as they have taken the role of a parental figure.Considering a family based on the options I feel would be B- trying to have two parental roles in which there is a relationship is healthy for a child to see and be raised with, don't mean necessarily that this is ideal for most, but it helps children to see two parental figures who care for each other to have a healthy understanding of relationships for their future selves.

I think the phrase "changing nature and face of the family" refers to the evolving structures, roles, and dynamics within families, shaped by cultural, social, and economic changes. Traditionally, the nuclear family (a father, mother, and children) was the dominant model, but today, families come in various forms, such as blended families, single-parent families, same-sex families, and extended families. These shifts reflect the increasing diversity of family structures, where caregiving and emotional bonds, rather than just biological ties, define familial connections. For example, a divorced man raising children with his elderly mother, a widower and his partner (either same-sex or opposite-sex) raising children together, or a tight-knit group of young adults living on the streets can all be considered families in modern definitions. In some cases, even three roommates with strong emotional bonds can form a "chosen family," showing that family isn't always confined to traditional or legal definitions but can extend to any group that provides mutual care and support.

kiarra struble: The phrase "changing nature and face of the family" describes how cultural, social, and economic changes have led to changes in the roles and definitions of what makes a family. In the past, a married heterosexual couple and their biological children were typically viewed as the nuclear family. Nonetheless, a variety of family arrangements are acknowledged in modern society, influenced by things like marriage, same-sex relationships, divorce, remarriage, single parenthood, and chosen families. All the listed examples (a-e) could be considered family. In the social sciences and psychology, family can be defined by long-term commitment, caregiving responsibilities, and emotional relationships rather than only biological or legal connections.

I believe that the developing definitions and structures of the family are reflected in the changing face and character of the family. Single-parent households, blended families, same-sex couples, and chosen families based on mutual support and emotional ties are just a few of the different types of modern families. Because they share strong and emotional relations and caregiving responsibilities, all of the examples found in psychological and social science literature, are (a) a divorced man, his children, and elderly mother; (b) a widower, his female partner, and children; (c) a widower, his male partner, and children; and (d) a close-knit group of young adults living on the streets can be regarded as family. (e) However, three roommates might not qualify as a family unless they had close, sustaining bonds beyond living together.

I believe that changing the nature and face of family pertains to what someone would consider “as family,” as not everyone has the same definition of what family consists of or the members of a family. I believe answers A-E consist of different types of “family” throughout different life phases. Scenario E seems to pertain to someone who is younger, and they might consider each other family, while scenario A might be someone who is in their late adulthood, and all his family members consist of his mother and his 3 children.

Families can look differently, and it doesn't always have to consist of biological members. Families can be mixed or blended with people that you have a close connection/relationship with. Many times, people refer to their friends as family. Examples a-d can be considered a "family" because they all share a relationship whether its biologically, or just out of friendship and love for one another. I don't see E as considered a kind of family because it doesn't suggest the kind of relationship that the roommates have with one other, apart from the fact that they just live together. Families don't always have a great relationship but their biology stills connects each member to one another, which is different from the friendship kind of families.

The changing nature and face of the family just refer to how the definition and the dynamic of families are changing over time. Families include a variety such as single-family households, blended families, same-sex parent families, or even chosen families. I think choices A-D are considered family based on the definition of family, the culture, and what family means to the individual involved. Letter A can be considered a multigenerational family, letter B a blended family, letter c a same-sex parent family, letter d could represent a chosen family. E can be viewed as a family but considering how their emotional connection is. Modern definition of family shows emotional bonds, support systems, and commitment. E may be considered family depending on how deep their emotional connection and support is.

With social norms changing as time has continued, we have come to understand the changing nature and face of the family. What some may view as being the family dynamic can vary based on cultural and societal factors. For an example, in western culture it may be acceptable to consider a same sex marriage with children as a family, where other cultures may see this as unacceptable and by no means a reflection of family. In my opinion, I would consider a as an example of “family.” For b and c, it would depend how close the partners (male or female) are to the children of the widower. For instance, I have a childhood best friend who lost their mother at a young age. They now live with their two sibling, their father, and his partner (who has a toddler). Her father’s partner is very cold to her and her siblings. They have safe locks on cabinets and bedroom doors to keep his children out of what they consider “their space in the house.” If the partner does not provide a sense of safety and security for the unit then it is not “family.” I would say that d and e are more so socially connected individuals, but they are not obliged to share responsibilities, they agree to them. Family is connected on a deeper level and there is a bond that can be stronger than social connection. In all, it is known that what people will do for family oftentimes supersedes what people will do for their friends.

Support, love, fear, comfort, and strength are all qualities some might have with one another that can be considered qualities families share. Groups a,b, and c show family structures and the relationships that are considered a family. Groups d and e show connection but do not have the needs a family has or the duties in a family household.

Options B and C should be considered a family because there are children involved and both parents are in a relationship. As for option D, they can somewhat be a family if they only have each other.

For example, different household roles between males and females and living arrangements. When looking at the examples above, situations a and b, and in my opinion, e are considered family. The first three are blood-related, making them direct family. Situation e could be symbolized as a family because oftentimes, a family could be considered anyone close to you. When it comes to the situation d, these young adults probably didn't know each other and weren't raised together.

Different situational changes might occur which would offset the traditional looking family. There is a changing in nature and face of families because as time goes on, events and people change which makes the family appear differently then the typical nuclear family. Examples of changing nature and faces of family could be foster families or single family households. These example are all different forms of family in there own way. B and C are families in the way of the two parental figures and their children. D and E are families not biologically but emotionally and socially. They look at each other in this way based on the closeness of the setting. A is a family but in a different setting because it doesn't include the mother of the three children, but by including the mother of the father, you could assume that she is either helping out or needs to be helped based off age.

Changing the nature and face of the family means shifts from the typical ideal family. This would usually consist of two parents and their children living together. However, as time goes on you see many different situations. A single mother with her children, a single father with his children, same-sex couples. These are all examples of changing the face of the everyday family. Groups A-C can be considered families. The reason is that they all consist of family members. One being a man with his children and mother. The others being partners living with their children. Groups D-E demonstrates small knit groups that could show a familial bond and be considered a 'second family'. These types of bonds could be just as important as a person's family and have just as much as an influence on a person.
