After a shirt factory in New York caught on fire and killed 146 garment workers (most of them young female immigrants) who were locked in the factory, Morgan decided to tackle the task of preventing smoke inhalation. The first mask he invented resembled a bee keeper's mask, with a tube that runs from the ground up to the mask. He tried to sell his invention but faced racism as he was black but in 1914 he hired a white actor to pose as the inventor and filled a tent with harmful gas. He then entered wearing his mask and came out 30, minutes later unharmed.
