         <title>Professional “Take Away”  from Reviewing Resources:</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>My greatest “take away” after reviewing the resources on burnout, compassion fatigue, and secondary trauma is that self-care is not an option or personal choice rather an ethical responsibility while in the profession of helping others.  If self-care is ignored, a counseling professional runs the risk of becoming impaired, due emotional, mental, or physical exhaustion, to the point that it negatively impacts the ability to effectively and positively serve others. Counselors may be less empathetic, make poor decisions, and lack focus, which can all compromise the quality of guidance offered to others.  As a result, in order to prevent burnout and lose the ability to perform counseling duties effectively, self-care must be prioritized.</p>]]></description>

Making time for self-care as a helping professional enhances their ability to effectively support and guide others without the feeling of burnout.  Prioritizing self-care is important in order to project a positive energy, sustainability, and show compassion to those seeking help navigate through personal challenges.</p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>There are many ways counselors can practice self-care; the most ideal would be activities that are of enjoyment or interest of oneself.  For example:</p><ul><li><p><strong>Setting Boundaries Between Work and Personal Time</strong> - this strategy will prevent burnout and ensure time is set aside that is strictly dedicated to allow the mind to rest through relaxation and personal leisure time.</p></li><li><p><strong>Regular Mindfulness Practices</strong> - meditation, deep breathing exercises, physical exercise, and yoga reduce stress levels and promote emotional balance.</p></li><li><p><strong>Painting/Drawing</strong> - allows the expression of emotions, reduce stress, allows the process of thoughts non-verbally, fosters self-reflection and is therapeutic.</p></li><li><p><strong>Journaling</strong> - serves as emotional release, process emotions, clarity, and fosters self-awareness and personal growth.</p></li><li><p><strong>Nutrition and Sleep Balance</strong> - healthy eating and a proper sleep schedule ensures overall health and promotes a positive mindset, energy and emotional stability.</p></li></ul>]]></description>
