Swastika

The Swastika symbol represents the Nazis during WW2. It was engraved on the uniforms of schools in Germany, and it was good for the citizens to hang up their own Swastikas outside their homes (even if they were secretly against it).

Prisoner of War (P.O.W.)

A P.O.W. is a Prisoner of War. It is when a person is being held captive by the opposing unit. An example of this would be Mr. Rossetti's great uncle, Ralph Mottola. He was a P.O.W. for Germany, and his experience was horrifying and traumatizing.

A trench in warfare is a type of protection the military used during the war. It is often very unhygienic and dirty. An example of a trench used in wartime was shown in the movie 1917 (shown in class).

Treaty of Versailles

The Treaty of Versailles is known to be one of the causes of WW2. The Treaty stated that Germany was to pay all the financial reparations from the previous war. Germany was already economically in a bad place, and the Treaty did not help them whatsoever.

Fascism

Fascism is an authoritarian political ideology led by a dictator. It emphasizes the supremacy of the nation over the individual, as well as nationalism and militarism. An example of a fascist leader would be Benito Mussolini of Italy.

Nationalism

In simple terms, nationalism is the belief in the superiority of one's country over others. If extreme, it can lead to conflict between countries. Leading up to WW2, Mussolini, Japan and Hitler tried promoting their country's ability to defeat others.

Ghettos

A ghetto is a place where groups of people are forcefully kept to be segregated from others. Ghettos are not luxurious, in fact they are very far from it. During WW2, the Nazis used ghettos to contain the Jewish population. Big families were kept in small houses, food was scarce, and harsh labor was enforced.

Pearl Harbor

The attack on Pearl Harbor was a surprise attack on the US by the Japanese forces on December 7, 1941. The US was avoiding the war, but this act of violence drew them in.

Economic Depression

Economic instability led to economic depression. Unemployment rates skyrocketed, people were starving, and small homes were crowded with big families. This led to political instability as well, which ultimately led to the start of WW2. Citizens turned to powerful leaders for hope (Hitler), which fueled his inhumane plans for Germany.

US Isolationism

Isolationism is remaining apart from any political conflict, usually to avoid warfare. An example of this is when the US was isolating itself from WW2. The attack on Pearl Harbor diminished any want to remain away from the war, therefore they joined and declared war on Japan.

Allied Forces

The Allied Forces consist mainly of Great Britain, The USSR, and The United States. They fought against the Axis Powers, and specifically the Nazis.

Axis Powers

The Axis Forces primary goal was expansion at the expense of their neighboring countries and islands. This consisted of Nazi Germany, Italy, and Japan. Their opposing enemy was the Allied Forces.
