Modern Korean uses the Hangul alphabet and sometimes includes a mixture of Chinese characters and Western terms. There are seven different levels of language to use depending on who is being addressed and the level of respect one wishes to convey.

Traditionally Koreans lived with extended family, but there has been a transition to living with only immediate family members. Women are delaying marriage and childbirth as it becomes more common for them to establish careers, so South Korea has one of the lowest birth rates in the world. Most families have no more than two children. Due to the Confucian values that children should respect their elders, most families keep detailed family histories. In general a child's sole focus is education, so they don't help out around the house. In exchange they are expected to care for their parents when they are older. Normally the wife of the oldest son is responsible for their care. The father and oldest son receive the most respect. The father is seen as the provider and final decision maker. Although women increasingly have jobs outside of the home to help support their kids' expensive educations, they are still solely responsible for maintaining the household and rearing children. Men usually don't help out around the house. Women also have a lower status than men in the workplace.

It is popular throughout most of Asia and in many other places in the world. K-pop is usually performed/created by bands or groups rather than solo artists. The band BTS is one of the most popular South Korean K-pop groups, and they were even nominated for a Grammy this year.
