·4th Grade ELA

·Practicing Listening and Reading Closely: The Haudenosaunee Thanksgiving Address

·What It's About:
In this lesson plan, students will be able to explain what a text says using specific details from the text, explain the main points in a historical text accurately, and engage effectively in discussions. Specifically, students will be able to do so as they read passages from the Thanksgiving Address.

·Procedure:
Begin with introduction and inform students what they will be learning. Show them a video on the Thanksgiving Address to give some historical background and have a class discussion on the origins, purpose and uses of the passage. Then hand out a copy of the Thanksgiving Address and have the students skim through and circle the words they don't know or understand. Have students reread the introduction and have them answer questions written on the board. Discuss the answers as a class assuring them it's fine that they may not know all of the answers. Then, tell students to closely read the first section of the Thanksgiving Address(The People) and ask them some "big-picture" questions. Have them reread closely one more time, sentence by sentence, and allow them to talk to their partner about what the gist of the paragraph is. Call on some volunteers for their answer. As you go along, write their responses in the margin of the paper. After, tell students to talk to their partners again and develop a "Close Readers Do These Things" anchor chart listing the things they did to read closely. Beginning with the next lesson, they will also be creating a "Keeping Track" anchor chart in their notebooks where they will be able to write down the main ideas of each passage they read. To debrief, have students talk to their partner about "what parts of today’s lesson helped you learn from hard reading?” and have them share out loud and celebrate their good reading. This type of self-assessment helps support all readers, especially struggling readers.

·Common Core Standards:
-RI.4.1 Refer to details and examples in a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text.
-RI.4.3 Explain events, procedures, ideas, or concepts in a historical, scientific, or technical text, including what happened and why, based on specific information in the text.
-SL.4.1 Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 4 topics and texts, building on others’ ideas and expressing their own clearly.

https://www.engageny.org/resource/grade-4-ela-module-1a-unit-1-lesson-2/file/103401

I believe the SAMR model is extremely helpful and valuable towards educators. Over the last thirty or so years technology has transformed the way we do everything. Eventually everyone will be using technology. Ultimately i believe exposing children to technology at a young age will help them. The more comfortable they are the easier their future will be. There are so many different forms of technology you are able to use in the classroom that it allows students to try different learning strategies. It also helps the teacher, this could help with organization or simple review games.
Derek Abeles

SAMR Perspective

As a future educator, I believe that the SAMR model is extremely valuable and useful for both educators and students. Over the years, technology has rapidly transformed and 21st century kids are already being exposed to it at a young age. It is inevitable that a child will eventually pick up a phone or ipad and play with it. Therefore teachers should take advantage of technology to positively impact students and learning in the classroom. With a restriction, there are many ways in which technology can benefit students. SmartBoards and chrome books are an interactive way of getting students engaged. It allows students to see and experience new things from a different perspective through pictures, videos, etc. It's a more visual way of learning which can help improve student achievement. Whereas it helps teachers design different lessons, present information in new and creative ways, and stay organized. Technology is also beneficial in the sense that it can help teachers keep tabs on all students to see who's improving and who needs help with what to ensure that they're paying attention to every student. This is why I believe the SAMR model is valuable and I will definitely be trying to incorporate it into my classroom not only for myself but for my students.
Dominique Ferrante

Substitution: Instead of handing out a copy of the Thanksgiving Address, the teacher can share a digital copy or word document on the computer for all students to read.
Augmentation: Students will be able to use the tools to bold, underline, highlight, etc. So students can underline words they may not understand in the text and highlight sentences that they think provide important detail to explain the passage. Students will also be able to add comments in the margin as the teacher does the same on a SmartBoard. In addition, it will also be easier for students to have a google document of their "Keeping Track" chart rather than writing it because it saves time, they have more space to write, and it keeps it organized.
Modification: When students are working with their partners on the charts, have them share a Google Doc with each other to keep track and store their ideas together.
Redefinition: Virtual walk through of the Haudenosaunee village during this time with virtual reality goggles. Another thing to do is post questions as part of the debrief on a google classroom page or teacher website where students can write their answers and have other students respond and discuss with them.
