Before his presidency, Mandela was an anti-apartheid activist, and the leader of the armed wing of the African National Congress. In 1962 he was arrested and sentenced to life prison. He spent 27 years in prison and when he was relased he fought a lot for reconciliation between whites and blacks for equality and against poverty in his country.
