The setting of The Great Gatsby greatly influences the conflict in the novel. Back then, divorce was seen as 'unholy' or 'wrong'. This served as a roadblock in Daisy and Gatsby's relationship. The prohibition on alcohol also influenced the story by letting Daisy's husband paint Gatsby as this despicable criminal which ultimately caused his death.

The idea of a conflict in Great Gatsby is due to the idea of an affair and having a cheating lifestyle during the 1920's. Being rebellious in the 20's was seen as a disobedient and seen as an awful taboo breaker, was because we are so used to old school that staying with your husband who is cheating on you was an idea that was accepted because divorce was seen as such an awful conclusion to leave your marriage on. Yet Gatsby tried to save Daisy because he knew it was wrong, yet no one said anything or stopped it. Crime was also a big play in the novel as when Daisy killed Tom's lover he was the suspect because Tom noticed Daisys relationship with Tom, and that is the sad part, that when a guy commits an act so terrible it is seen as normal, yet when a woman does something of the same subject she is seen as a harlot, that is the sad truth of this novel.

The 1920s is well known through history as the "Jazz" era. a surging economy created an era of mass consumerism, as Jazz-Age flappers flouted Prohibition laws and the Harlem Renaissance redefined arts and culture. In the Great Gatsby the Author F. Scott Fitzgerald captures the Roaring 20s, in a way that when The Great war ended Europe was devastated. From 1920 to 1929 marked the emerge of the United States as the premiere power in the world. America enjoyed an economic boom, with a steady rise in economic levels, business growth, construction, and trading on the stock market.

In the novel The Great Gatsby we see a lot of settings but one that was touched a lot and was emerging during the 1920's was ''The Flappers''. Women could now wear short skirts, a new hair style, cigarettes and alcohol. Obviously if you were to be seeing drinking or with short skits your social position said a lot of you and your family. We need to keep in mind that alcohol was prohibited during the roaring 20's .
