Chaney High Cypher

This video shows a group of students in a cypher circle. This is a representation of a rap cypher that brings students together. These students naturally create what "Paulo Freire described as a culture circle--where adults who were learning to read and write came together in an informal learning space" ( Emdin, 2016, p.114). These students who probably have different ethnicities and background take their experiences and unique ways of speaking to communicate with each other and share themselves with the rest of the cypher. Students who are reserved in class or have different skills are welcome to participate and become fully engaged in the cypher with peers.

Cyphers benefit teachers

Using the concepts of cyphers can help teachers to engage with students. In efforts to improve urban classrooms, "the implementation of cogens (cogenerative dialogues) that draw from the structure of the hip-hop cypher and the spirit of the culture circle have proven to increase student, participation, and performance" ( Emdin, 2016, p.116). These simple collaborative conversations with students and teachers create classroom community/ unity and improve the class. The video of Kid President's Pep Talk to teachers and students talks about how important people have done ordinary things just like lil ole' Kid President like putting his pants on one leg at a time. This reminds me that all teachers have been in the students place and it is important to remember that they can still learn from the students. Kid President says in the video, "Everybody is a teacher and everybody's a student."

Know the diversity of students

Teachers should select students for the cogen with different ethnicities and academic groups etc. The group should represent various groups of students. the teacher should accurately "reflect the diversity of the students" (Emdin, 2016, p.121). A teacher cannot just identify Latino students, but should identify their descent and appreciate differences. The video discusses the difference between Latino, Hispanic, and Spanish, which relates to the ignorance of people groups.

Learning is can be better if taught in non-traditional ways. The teacher must be willing to let students get up and talk with others. Peer-to-peer teaching should reflect the conversation structure of the neoindigenous (Emdin, 2016). In this video the students are teaching one another. The teacher allows for the room to be louder and students talk over each other.

Many students listen who listen to hip-hop know that the themes are related to experiences and overcoming adversity. The songs remind me and others of the challenges we have had to face but listening to them help us rise up and overcome.I chose this video because, the author Christopher Emdin reflects on how when he would need motivation he would use call-and-response with another student saying, "Every day I'm...and [the student] would respond be repeating the word 'hustling' " (Emdin, 2016, p.196).
