Sir George Prevost. He led the British army into North America. He had great tactics when he was defending and that is how he kept Canada for a long time. America was unsuccessful trying to capture Canada for a long time. During the time he was commanding the British army he won 28 different battles.

The British had a long and treacherous journey across the Atlantic Ocean to get to North America. The British were relying on the tens and thousands of British Sailors to make there voyage. Once the British arrived they were there to help Canada defend themselves against the american troops that were pushing into their land. Since the British were allies with Canada they defended together to fight back. The british defended Canada and they never got defeated. After the war America had no point to attack Canada so they kept their land.

“The King’s government … [has] most unequivocally expressed to me their desire to preserve peace with the United States, that they might, uninterrupted, pursue with the whole disposable force of the country, the great[er] interest in Europe.”

— George Prevost, British, Governor General of Canada, 1812

The War of 1812, which lasted from 1812 to 1814 was a military conflict between the U.S.A and Great Britain. As a colony of Great Britain, Canada was swept up within the War of 1812 and was invaded several times by the Americans. The war was fought in Upper Canada, Lower Canada, on the Great Lakes and therefore the Atlantic, and within the USA. The peace of Ghent in 1814, which ended the war, largely returned the established order. However, in Canada, the war contributed to a growing sense of national identity, including the thought that civilian soldiers were largely liable for repelling the American invaders. In contrast, the primary Nations allies of British and Canadian cause suffered much due to the war; not only had they lost many warriors (including the good Tecumseh), they also lost any hope of halting American expansion within the west, and their contributions were quickly forgotten by their British and Canadian allies (see First Nations and Métis Peoples within the War of 1812).

Most British soldiers were using "Brown Bess" muskets. This firearm had not evolved in the previous century and was very inaccurate. When it came to shooting others it was not very useful. It would take too long to reload and did not have a long-range. It had a range of 175 yards and was very inaccurate at that range. Most shots would hit at 50 yards and less which is not a very long range. Still then you would have to be really good to reach that distance with it hitting someone.

The immediate causes of the War of 1812 were a series of economic sanctions taken by British and French against the US as a part of the Napoleonic Wars and American outrage at British practice of impressiveness, especially after the Chesapeake incident of 1807. In response to the 1806 British Orders in Council, which crippled American trade, the US (under Jefferson) first tried various retaliatory embargoes. These embargoes hurt the US much more than they did Britain, angering Americans and providing support to War Hawks in Congress like Henry Clay. In 1812, with Madison in office, Congress declared war against the British.

The war began with an attack on Canada, both as an attempt to realize land and to chop off British supply lines to Tecumseh's Indian confederation, which had long troubled the US. The initial battles in Canada weren't as easy because the War Hawks hoped, and therefore the inexperienced American soldiers were pushed back rapidly. In fact, only by virtue of clutch naval victories by Oliver Hazard Perry on Lake Erie and Thomas Macdonough on Lake Champlain was a significant northern- front invasion of the USA, including New York, prevented. General Henry Harrison's forces did manage to kill Tecumseh at the Battle of the Thames in 1813, within the midst of a decisive victory against British General Isaac Brock's smaller force.
