Children living in poverty typically lack the opportunity to go to school. Children that live in poverty also have lower cognitive and academic performances. "In 2023, about four percent of the people with a Bachelor's degree or higher were living below the poverty line in the United States" (Statista).

Without going to school, it results in having no degree, which limits the amount of job opportunities those children have in the future. When children face poverty they may have to help provide for their families by working so they cannot attend a full day of school or school at all.

Physical and mental health is are crucial components to a child's development. When a child is undergoing poverty they result in being malnourished due to not having access to food and clean water. Being malnourished also brings problems such as hair loss, suppressed metabolism, infertility, etc. Other health effects of poverty include airborne diseases, diabetes and overall chronic illnesses. The mental health side of it, includes issues such as depression, anxiety, ADHD, ODD and overall poor coping skills from trauma (OACAS).

When living everyday with poverty, it is more like surviving than living. Living conditions when dealing with an issue as impactful as this consists of not being able to have a proper bathroom with a toilet and shower, not having a bed to sleep on, and the worst factor, undergoing atrocious weather conditions. When children are not surrounded by basic necessities, the end result is having to navigate through different social classes. What is especially hard for children to face with poverty is seeing the crime surrounding them first hand, most notably theft and robbery.

In The Glass Castle, Jeannette Walls suffered with poverty with the rest of her family. As a child she was surrounded by parents who did not have proper jobs, until her mom became a teacher. As a child she also was surrounded by parents who did not properly manage their money, by her mother spending it on art supplies and her dad spent it on alcohol and gambling. With their conflicts in money management, it resulted in being poor. Jeannette being a child in poverty dealt with observing her father taking his anger out on his family when he was drunk, them constantly moving so they did not get caught with not paying what they were supposed to and having to grow up adapting basically alone. Jeanette had to mature a lot faster than other children her age, which made her develop differently than others. When the Walls family were on one of their moves her dad says, "If the cops stopped us, they'd find out that we had no registration or insurance and that the license plate had been taken off another car, they'd arrest us all" (Walls 48). Adapting alone consisted of her working hard in school, saving up her own money to move to New York and overall wanting her future to be different than the living conditions she was in.

Poverty is a repeated problem over generations with families. Poverty can root from an individual themselves falling into it, but overall the main cause of poverty is a cycle with families and if you were born into it, you most likely stay in it.

The main cause of poverty recurring is no education, which leads to no job opportunities. Getting an education is important because it can open up doors towards all sorts of careers "Education is the key to ‘Breaking the Cycle’ as the impoverished children can be motivated to better themselves so that they can obtain a secondary education and then find a job with livable wages” (Vien).

When people who are struggling decide to be comfortable with their living situations and not attempt to get an education, it limits their chances of breaking out of poverty.

The Glass Castle exemplifies how when you are born into a family of poverty it is hard to break the cycle. Rex Walls is the dad of Jeannette Walls and he exemplifies how the cycle did not break from his parents to him, but it broke with his daughter Jeanette.

Rex grew up in a home with parents who were alcoholics, he then became an alcoholic after he became a father of his own. He may not have grew up in poverty but because he was influenced in becoming an alcoholic, that is a factor of why he is poor.

Jeannette did the almost impossible, of breaking the cycle of poverty from her dad and her mom for her future life and family. Jeannette did this by wanting to move to New York to get a proper education and job. She started this goal by, "I told Lori about my escape fund, the seventy five dollars I have saved" (Walls 223). Jeanette made an escape fund to move to New York, and once she made it to New York she was successful with her career as a journalist.

"The international literature reviewed supports the notion that material poverty is a risk factor for a negative outcome among mentally ill people" (Saraceno). These mental illnesses can include depression, anxiety and ADHD and schizophrenia (Storey). It is scientifically proven that if you are mental ill you can potentially end up in poverty through the wrong path. It is also proven that people that suffer with poverty experience a greater chance of experiencing mental health illnesses. This happens because when one is struggling with a mental illness, it can disrupt their education and career so with their lack of secure employment, in turn, it effects their amount of income being received.

Rex was an alcoholic and the mental illness he expressed he potentially had was bipolar disorder. Rex had shown significant moments of anger towards his wife and his children, and almost right after acts friendly.

An example of this is when Rex was chasing Rose Mary, his wife, with his car, "I was afraid he might smash her with the car, but instead he got out and dragged her back, legs flailing, and threw her into the car" (Walls 43). After this event occurred, Rex made up with Rose Mary and acted like nothing had ever happened.

Overall, it is not diagnosed that Rex had bipolar disorder but we can assume that he does by the way he acted and spoke.

This song by Phil Collins relates to poverty because it is about crossing a homeless woman on the street and pretending not to hear her try to communicate. The title of this song is ironic because it is not another day in paradise, as paradise is a happy place, but this woman is not in a happy place but in a struggling place.
