Representative Howard: Tell me if you could do anything to make the situation better, what would you want us to know. What d you want us to do in terms of making your jobs easier or give you the support you need? To ensure all students get what they need to be successful. A-F seems to be more a reflection of poverty than student performance. What should we be looking at/ things we should be doing to support your students?

We need more collaboration among the different organizations in our community especially the kids in the community I work. All this virutal learning is really a tough situation for them. Parents are not aware of how to handle technology. Starting at that point they are already disadvantages getting the learning they can get and the district is providing.

I can't say enough about much more money we need. My operating budget is less than 50,000 a year. I service a school that is very similar to many AISD schools. I have title budget on top of that that is around 50,000 a year. That is unreal. My brother works in tech industry in Austin and 50,000 is what htey can use to pay for monitors tomorrow for employees to get them. Resources is one tangible thing. I know it is very difficult. It speaks volumes when we don't fund it properly and we don't fund teachers properly. Districts only have so much ability to wiggle in how much they can find because they are only receiving so much money from the state. I would also change the accountability system. Educators by nature we are creative and able to assess student learning. If given the resources and ability to think outside the box and report on student learning in different ways we could show student progress and growth and not connected on how schools are graded. Trickle down stress to our nine year olds who get almost a physical illness.

The pressure that is on the school district that is on schools. It i snot just one test, its many test and weeks to prepare. I was wondering why and its because the students couldnt provide transportation tot eh elementary school campus. The only students who could continue were the ones who could provide transportation for themselves. Then the program stopped because the school didnt have resources. It was a great program. "we have to go back? why aren't you doing your job I have to do my job?" I feel like sometimes in my district we are making decisions based on this tide. The parents feel like they have to come back because they don't have another choice, not the parents who are essential workers who really have no choice. The tide feels like when your buttons are pushed to a point to where you explode. I wonder about the anger people feel about educators because things arent normal and things are hard at home supporting a student at virtual learning.
I have teachers doing both virtual and in person. I worry about that piece of the parent advocacy piece.

I would need to do more research but one of my hopes/dreams is more professional development for teachers around the whole child and mental health. Kids are living a lot of life and teachers could use the support and things come up and they don't necessarily have the training to support them in a tier I/ii way. They get referred to counselors and outside resources. i want to see our teachers prepared to better handle these situations. In AISD cultural proficiency department is doing a great job training prinicpals around racism. There are other conversations in the classroom where our social/ emotional curriculum is not enough.

When we name them as disadvantaged we put them in boxes and we dehumanize them. it is part of the larger discourse of how we talk bout our kids (urban/ disadvantage). We assign deficit understandings of kids and families. Think about who are the advantaged kids. I would love for my elected officials to be thoughtful about their language and how their language affects kids and families and how that language can put them into boxes and deficit and negativity that isnt them. As a culture we have more work to do. I am struck by that when I hear people representing me using language that does not represent my children and families in knowing them.
