Definition: The process through which a learner gradually incorporates socially based activities into his or her internal cognitive processes.

Example: kids learn social norms like looking someone in the eye when you are talking to them

Activity: Do an activity where they are pretending they are just meeting each other. Tell them to shake each others hand and make eye contact because this is a social norm that they need to learn. Something else you could teach them is to keep their hands to theirselves because giving people space is another social norm.

Mediated Learning

Mediated learning was a concept created by Lev Vygotsky that was known to be a subtle interaction between a learner and the instructor. Mediated learning can be used throughout all ages and levels of education.
Definition: Mediated learning focuses more on the learning style of the learner rather than the surrounding environment. With mediated learning there are specific goals of the instructor in regards to the student. Emotional investment and intention to provide structure will provide success in areas of focus.
Example: An example of mediated learning would be using patterns, order, and routines throughout the classroom.
Activity: An example where this could be used in the classroom could be having a specific math schedule or having a specific schedule for the children to follow when they come into the classroom. When a teacher has a specific schedule for the students to follow or a specific style/pattern they teach with this could help the students learn more efficiently.

What it is:
A process in which teachers model or demonstrate how to do a problem, then step back when the kids are ready to do this by themselves, but still offering support as needed. This term, scaffolding, came out of the ZPD concept.
