Stage 1: Trust vs. Mistrust

The first Stage of Erikson's Developmental Timeline is Trust vs. Mistrust. This stage can determine how a child grows up and how they see the world. According to our textbook: "(birth to 12-18 months) Baby develops sense of whether world is a good and safe place.” From what I know about my time as an infant, I was a very trusting baby and would go to anyone without crying. I was told that when at family events or at friends houses I would be passed around and would laugh and get along with anyone. I think that because my mother introduced me to so many people and showed me that there was nothing to fear that I had trust.

The second Stage of Erikson's Development Timeline is Autonomy vs. Shame & Doubt. This stage is when a child goes between independence and doubt in there day to day life. During this time in my life I was on the Autonomy side of this stage. I was a very curious toddler and my family allowed me to explore and be independent. I would walk around and play with lots of different toys. I had a huge imagination and would pretend to be a princess, waitress, rock star, and doctor. According to our textbook: "(12-18 months to 3 years) “Child develops a balance of independence and self-sufficiency over shame and doubt.” With this definition I definitely showed autonomy in this stage of my life.

Stage 3: Initiative vs. Guilt

The stage of Initiative vs. Guilt is the third stage of Erikson's Timeline. This stage is determined by how a child reacts to new situations and how they feel after. The definition according to our textbooks is: "(3 to 6 years) Child develops initiative when trying new activities and is not overwhelmed by guilt.” I personally think that I went through the guilt portion of this stage. As a young child I would be overwhelmed by Guilt. I remember not wanting to do things wrong because I didn’t want to get in trouble and when I would do something wrong I would tell on myself because I would feel guilty. An example that I remember of this is when I ate chocolates from the jar when I was told not to. I ate a few and then went to my room. I remember coming out and crying and telling on myself because I was overwhelmed with guilt. I learned new skills but I felt guilt if I did not do it correctly.

The next stage of Erikson's Timeline is Industry vs. Inferiority. This stage is determined by how children react to criticism and if they take it to heart or if they learn from it. This stage according to our text book is: "(6 years to puberty) Child must learn skills of culture or face feelings of incompetence." In my experience I learned new skills and accepted criticism and this made me work harder. Within school and extracurriculars I chose to listen to my teachers and coaches and work to be better not feel discouraged and incompetent. For example, I had a hard time learning how to read but I never gave up and took my teachers advise and became a great reader and placed in the higher level.

Stage 5: Identity vs. Role Confusion

The fifth stage of Erikson's timeline is Identity vs. Role Confusion. This stage is around junior high and collage and is how a person feels about themselves and their future. Our textbook says: "(puberty to young adulthood) Adolescent must determine sense of self (“Who am I?”) or experience confusion about roles.” I personally think this has been the hardest stage I have went through so far. When finishing junior high and high school I felt like I had a good sense of who I was but once I graduated high school I was very confused. I went to college and ended up leaving and switched my major and then ended up taking a year off. During this time I was very confused because I wasn't doing what I felt like I was supposed to be doing. I wasn't taking classes like most of my friends but I was also not doing a job that I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I think that I was definitely in the Role Confusion stage.

Stage 6 is the Intimacy vs. Isolation Stage and the current stage in my life. This is the stage where adults choice to be in a relationship or alone. Our textbook states: "(young adulthood) Person seeks to make commitments to others or may suffer from isolation and self-absorption.” I personally am the in the Intimacy stage. I am in a long term relationship that is leading to marriage and I have many other committed relationships with friends. This stage of my life has been the most fun and happiest of any other stage.

This next stage is Generativity vs. Stagnation and will be the next stage that I enter. This stage is the stage where adults chose to focus on them or focus on the younger generation. When looking at the definition in our book: "(middle adulthood) Mature adult is concerned with establishing and guiding the next generation or else feels personal impoverishment." I believe is will be in the Generativity stage. I hope to be a mother and then towards the end of this stage be a grandmother. I think that I will enjoy being a mother and helping guide the next generation. I also plan on being a teacher and helping guid the future generations and this is definitely the generativity stage.

The final stage of Erikson's Developmental Timeline is Ego Integrity vs. Despair. This final stage is how one feels at the end of their life and if they are ready to die or want to keep living. Our book says: "(late adulthood) Elderly person achieves acceptance of own life, allowing acceptance of death, or else despairs over inability to relive life." As of right now, I think that I will be in the despair part of this stage. I don't like thinking about death and I think that I will be sad and not ready to die. I also think that I will be scared to leave my family and friends and do not want to miss out of my future children and grandchildren's lives.
