I have used external harddrive, thinking it was the most secure way. Unfortunatelly it failed. I don't know what was the reason, but out of the blue there was no access to my files. I had to pay to recover my information, there was no 100% recovery- maybe around 80%, and the information was not stored as originally rather messed up.

I also use dropbox but i am not fond of upgrading storage plans .

When I use Cloud Storage (OneDrive), I feel confident that I can have access to my resources, from any device. The disadvantage is that to have that access, needs internet connection.

The use of an external hard drive makes the content accessible with or without internet connection, but it should be used carefully, in order to be secured (with encryption) and not to be used anywhere as to be kept safe from viruses. A difficult experience is when an external disk was destroyed (I don't know how it happened) and lost important content.

Over the years, I've experimented with various storage methods to manage my digital content effectively. Here's a breakdown of my experiences with different storage options:

Local Storage (Hard Disks, External Drives):

Accessibility: Local storage provides immediate access to files without relying on an internet connection, which is beneficial when internet access is limited or unreliable.

Security: Since data is stored physically, there's a lower risk of unauthorized access compared to online storage. However, local storage devices are susceptible to theft, damage, or hardware failures.

Cost: Initially, purchasing external hard drives can be cost-effective compared to cloud storage subscriptions. However, the need to upgrade hardware over time may incur additional expenses.

Convenience: Local storage offers flexibility in organizing files and folders according to personal preferences. However, managing backups and ensuring data redundancy can be time-consuming.

Online Storage Spaces (Cloud, Online Services):

Accessibility: Cloud storage allows access to files from any device with an internet connection, promoting collaboration and flexibility in teaching and learning environments.

Security: Leading cloud storage providers offer robust security measures, including encryption, authentication, and regular data backups, enhancing protection against data breaches or loss.

Cost: While cloud storage may involve recurring subscription fees, many providers offer free tiers with limited storage capacity. Additionally, scalability options allow for adjusting storage needs as required.

Convenience: Cloud storage simplifies file management by automatically syncing files across devices and enabling seamless sharing with students, colleagues, and parents. However, reliance on internet connectivity can pose challenges in areas with poor network coverage.

Overall Reflection:

In my experience, both local and online storage options have their advantages and limitations. For sensitive or confidential documents, I prioritize local storage to maintain greater control over access and security. However, for collaborative projects, educational resources, and non-sensitive files, cloud storage proves invaluable due to its accessibility, scalability, and ease of sharing.

As technology evolves and security concerns persist, finding the right balance between local and online storage remains crucial for ensuring the integrity, accessibility, and confidentiality of digital content in educational settings.

As I explained in another Padlet, I didn’t use to be very organized and I would store content in my personal devices until there was no more space left. As time passed by, I realized it was absolutely necessary to find suitable options for such big number of files.

For personal ones, such and pictures, videos, bank documents and so on, I just trust hard disks that no one else can have access to. It is true, as Pompilia has pointed out, that local storage devices are susceptible to theft, damage or failure, but I prefer to run the risk (and for pictures I have several copies…)

As for online storage, I started with apps such as Diigo or Symbaloo to keep my favourite online resources and then y discovered cloud storage and used Dropbox. I gradually moved to Drive and OneCloud depending on school preferences, which are so invaluable because of their accessibility and ease of sharing.

In my teaching experience, I've utilized both local storage, like hard drives, and online storage, such as cloud services. Local storage offers immediate access but is vulnerable to hardware failures, necessitating regular backups. Conversely, online storage provides accessibility from any internet-connected device, with added security features like encryption. While local storage requires a one-time purchase, online storage often operates on subscription models. Considering factors like accessibility, security, cost, and convenience is crucial when choosing the right storage solution for educational resources.

I have used both local storage and online storage for storing digital content, and I have found that each option has its own pros and cons.

Local storage, such as hard disks and external drives, are usually more convenient for storing large amounts of data. They offer fast access speeds and are easy to use. However, local storage can be susceptible to damage or data loss if the storage device fails. In terms of security, local storage can be at risk of theft or physical damage, so it is important to have backups in place.

On the other hand, online storage spaces, such as cloud services, provide convenient and reliable access to files from any device with an internet connection. Cloud storage is often more secure than local storage, as data is stored on secure servers and can be encrypted for added protection. Online storage is also scalable, meaning you can easily upgrade your storage capacity as needed.

In terms of cost, local storage options typically involve a one-time purchase of the storage device, whereas online storage services may require a monthly or yearly subscription fee. It is important to consider how much storage space you need and how often you will be accessing your files to determine which option is more cost-effective in the long run.
