One day, he was incredibly mean when another fish asked him for a shining scale. Eventually, no other fish wanted to be his friend anymore. He set out to visit the old wise octopus to learn why nobody wanted to be his friend anymore. The octopus told him to try giving away one of his shining scales saying, "You will no longer be the most beautiful fish in the sea, but you will discover how to be happy." After much thought and turmoil, Rainbow fish gave away one small scale. After seeing the happiness in his friends reaction, he continued to give away all of his scales until he was down to only one. This book discusses the overall theme of sharing, selflessness, and even delves deeper as children age into the idea that one does not necessarily find happiness in material things, but rather in the relationships we share.
