Human security provides protection among various humanitarian aspects, such as threats against safety, dignity, and well-being. However, the global refugee crisis poses a major human security challenge as conflicts, climate change, and persecution entirely drive it, and displacement only leads to diminished physical safety, access to resources, and fundamental human rights.

In 2015, Germany accepted over 1,000,000 primarily Syrian refugees and efficiently streamlined asylum processes as well as various integration programs (language classes, employment, etc.). As a result, Germany created an environment where Syrian refugees were able to contribute positively to the German economic state by filling labor shortages and starting businesses. Initially, there was widespread resistance from the German public, but this was eventually avoided and mitigated through the implementation of public education initiatives.

For the most part, refugee admission to the U.S. fluctuates depending on the legislative course of action taken by the presidential administration of the United States. Ex-President Donald Trump ultimately decided to cut the refugee admission cap to 15,000 refugees in 2021, but President Joe Biden and his administration increased that cap to 125,000. Although the U.S. provides a well-structured infrastructure in its resettlement plans, there remains much political and social polarization surrounding views on immigration. The primary concern that becomes increasingly complicated is maintaining adequate border security whilst attending to humanitarian obligations.

In 2015, during the Europen migrant crisis, Hungary held a widely anti-immigrant stance and implemented preventative measures against European migrants. These measures included but were not limited to heavily fortified border walls, restrictions on asylum applications, and the dispersion of anti-immigration propaganda. This ultimately led to heavy critiques from the EU and various human rights organizations to argue that Hungary had broken numerous human rights laws in a primarily xenophobic nature. However, Hungary asserted that it was a matter of maintaining national security.

It has been noted that success amidst the Refugee Crisis, as it pertains to heightened levels of human security, has occurred through the implementation of:

Streamlined asylum programs with adequate legal protection.

Persistent work through global frameworks and institutions such as the UNHCR to share responsibility.

Education programs provided to citizens in order to eradicate fears or myths surrounding the idea of a refugee or immigrant; ultimately providing citizens with information regarding the overall benefits that come with welcoming refugees.

The usage of technology to more efficiently track resources and process digital asylum applications.

For example, Canada has instituted private sponsorship programs where Canadian citizens are able to support refugees directly. Additionally, Rwanda has taken legislative courses of action by legally enacting refugee policies that provide access to professional and educational opportunities.
