This quote is important to the story because of the conflict between the Greasers and the Socs. At the beginning of the story, Ponyboy was confronted by several Socs. He didn't show any sign of opposition or violence, and as a result, they beat him up. However, at the end of the book, when they approached, he broke a bottle and threatened them with it. This is important to both the theme and the conflict of The Outsiders. Ponyboy realizes that all Socs and Greasers are individuals, and that finding a way around the situation instead of reacting with violence would be better.

This is actually quite an important quote because Paul and Darry were once friends and now they're here to beat the tar out of each other. The only reason why they are fighting is because of the factions they are in. If Darry's parents didn't die then he and Paul would still be friends. They didn't fight because they hated each other they fought because they were told to hate the other side. This is a picture of struggle. They could have probably still been friends if it wasn't for everybody having to hate the other side. I think that Dally meant this to say that , if you stayed on the safer side, you wouldn't get hurt like you did in the rumble. I think he meant that it's better personally for you to not take risks then to risk everything. I think this also proved that Johnny's personality and overall character has changed from being a shy and cowardly greaser, to becoming this strong and confident person.

In the book it talks a lot about the differences between Greasers and Soc's. Really they are just kids trying to fit in some group. Randy doesn't like fighting all the time, and all throughout the book Ponyboy talks and thinks about if the fighting and stealing things is worth it. He wonders what's the point of it?

I think this means that if you think deeper to this quote that you will see it foreshadows the conflict towards the end of the book. He is trying to step out of the shadows that he caused to himself, and into the light where he will be noticed.
