There is no cure for sickle cell anemia. Once you have it, you have it for life. It can, however, be treated and helped in several different ways. In severe cases, a person may require a blood transfusion to counteract the disease. Certain drugs can be taken to dull the pain, to increase red blood cell count, and to help fight other illnesses that may become more dangerous to someone who has sickle cell anemia.

People who have sickle cell anemia do not have fully functioning red blood cells. While some of the cells are fine and do their job like they are supposed to, the disorder causes many of the cells to become misshapen, which causes them to function poorly. With this, the amount of oxygen going through the body is reduced. Other things that red blood cells are meant to carry are not being carried, and people who have sickle cell anemia will have a wide range of problems from joint damage, to loss of vision, to an increased possibility of infections such as pneumonia.
