This myth inspired a hatred towards a democracy, helping spread support for fascism.

The Great Depression left 6 million people in Germany unemployed. Foreign loans used to pay reparations and support the industry dried up, and the investments fell. The people were miserable, but there was hope in the form of the Nazi leader, Adolf Hitler, who offered a return of the great Germany. The Great Depression left people malleable, giving Hitler the perfect opportunity to seize power by gaining the support of the people through manipulation by tempting the with their desires.
