The cilia secrete a sticky mucus that traps dust and other airborne particles. They also move backwards and forwards to move the mucus out of the lungs which keeps the lungs clean and free from infection. Because of excess mucus in&nbsp; the lung passageways lung function is reduced and it becomes hard to get a breath. The use of tobacco products also causes irritation to the wind pipe and voice box. Cystic Fibrosis causes this mucus to become so thick, that cilia cannot sweep it out.  Trapped bacteria cause frequent infections and damage.          <description><![CDATA[<div>Smoking cigarettes doesn't immediately affect the respiratory system, but it acts slowly. First, when smoking, the cilia that beats to keep your respiratory system from getting clogged freezes, then over time gets paralyzed, and eventually completely disappears. This is with continued smoking. Without the cilia, there is nothing to remove mucus from the airways and the person must cough it up. Mucus being stuck in air passages is the perfect opportunity for pathogens to grow and this is why most smokers are more sickly than nonsmokers.&nbsp; Continued smoking habits&nbsp; can cause the smoker to have impaired breathing, coughing, and wheezing.<br><br>Smoking can damage your airways and your alveoli. You are at risk for COPD and chronic bronchitis.
