Padfolding Prefolds

* Fold the prefold at right-angles to the lines (the thicker strip in the middle). Fold over 3 or 4 times.
* Slip the folded prefold under the flaps in the wrap. On smaller rise settings, you may also need to fold down the front of the prefold to fit.
* Top with a fleece liner to keep skin feeling dry and help prevent stains.

* The most absorbent nappy type.
* Excellent containment of runny newborn poo!
* Use vest extenders and size up clothing if needed.
* Boosters can be removed from the Little Lamb and Bambams to make the nappy slimmer when baby is very small.
* Slow drying. Assume +/- 24hrs on an airer.
* Two part nappies are ideal night nappies, from +/- 6w - potty training. Bear in mind young babies may still need an additional late-night change up until around 3-4 months, depending on how much they are feeding overnight.

Using Wraps

* The waterproof part of a 2-part nappy - use over flats or fitteds.
* Do not tumble dry or place on hot radiator!
* Wraps do not need to be tight at the waist. You should be able to get at least 2 fingers inside.
* Wraps with a double gusset should have the inner gusset tucked into the knicker line.
* Airflow wraps are meant to fit like Victorian bloomers, and can be loose on the legs, and snug at the waist.
* Always check that all of the nappy, whether fitted or flat, is covered and not peeking out.

Tips for Boosting

* Little Lambs triple layer boosters can be added to almost any nappy to extend the wear (time between changes).
* Newborn all-in-ones often aren't suitable for boosting, as it makes them too bulky.
* Note: with very young babies (< 1 mo) changing every 1.5 - 2 hours is normal; aim for 2- 2.5 hrs by 6-8w.
* Can be folded over and placed at the front for a boy, or towards the back for a girl.
* Can be added inside Close Pop-in under the insert, or folded inside a Bambam booster & added to a wrap to make a very trim, quick nappy.

* Prefolds can be used padfolded or wrapped around baby using the Angel wing fold, & secured with a nippa.
* Terries and Muslinz can be padfolded, or more commonly wrapped in a range of folds and secured with a nippa; a wrap/cover is then secured over it. Suitable folds for newborns are:
* Jo Fold
* Origami/Bat fold
* Pickman fold

* Place a fleece liner on top to keep baby's bum feeling dry.
* Rolling the leg edges into a cuff helps prevent poonamis and improves fit.

* Bambams are a trim-fitting nappy, ideal on slightly smaller babies. They may start to get snug when baby is around 10-11lbs.
* A booster can be added as shown - fold into half or thirds (for very tiny babies) and place under fleece liner before securing the nappy.

* Bimbles are another very trim, tiny fitted nappy; they will fit from around 5lbs and will start to get snug around 10-11lbs.
* The booster is sewn in, but pulls out to speed up drying time. They are fleece lined, so no need for a separate liner.
* Secure with a nippa, or else you can rely upon the waterprood wrap to keep everything together.

Tips for using

Modern cloth nappies are designed to look and fit more like disposable nappies. Their ease of use and trim size makes them attractive to many parents, as they are convenient and quick to change.

They are ideal for packing in your hospital bag (with a wetbag), if you would like to try reusables right from the start.

Be aware that they are less absorbent than 2-part nappies, so will not last long on heavy-wetting older newborns. Overall, what they make up in convenience, they lose in 'bombproof-ness'. They will generally not last over a long sleep/nap, unless you change right beforehand.

They are also slow-drying, and cannot be tumbledried.

Because of their small size, AIOs can't really be boosted. Pockets and the Pop-ins can be boosted - slip one of the Little Lamb boosters inside.

The shells of the Close Pop-ins are in effect spare wraps, which can be used over any flat or fitted nappies.

Modern Cloth Nappies are very useful for the very early days, when you are still getting the hang of things; for when you are doing many changes in quick succession (if baby poops a lot!); or if you need a trimmer nappy.
