1. Description of DVT

DVT occurs when a blood clot forms in one or more of the deep veins in your body, usually in the legs. Deep vein thrombosis can cause leg pain or swelling, but also can occur with no symptoms. Deep vein thrombosis can develop if you have certain medical conditions that affect how your blood clots. It can also happen if you don't move for a long time, such as after surgery or an accident, or when you're confined to bed. This is very dangerous because it can lead to pulmonary embolism which blocks blood flow.

2. Symptoms

Swelling in the affected leg. Rarely, there's swelling in both legs.
-Pain in your leg. The pain often starts in your calf and can feel like cramping or soreness.
-Red or discolored skin on the leg.
-A feeling of warmth in the affected leg.

It can also occur without noticeable symptoms.

3. Treatment

-Blood thinners can treat DVT. These drugs can be injected or taken orally. it helps to decrease blood clots or prevent new ones from developing.
-Clot buster is given through an IV line to break up blood clots or through a catheter placed directly into the clot. This can help break blood clots quickly.
-Filters can also be used to prevent clots that break loose from lodging in your lungs. Inserted through the large vein and the abdomen.
-Compression stockings prevent swelling associated with deep vein thrombosis, these are worn on your legs from your feet to about the level of your knees.

It can be caused by anything the prevents your blood from circulating or clotting normally. Such as, an injury to the vein, surgery, or medications.

5. Possible complications

A serious complication that can occur is pulmonary embolism. This occurs when a blood vessel in your lung becomes blocked by a blood clot that travels to your lung from another part of your body, usually your leg. This is very dangerous and life threatening.
