Joining the League went against Washington's farewell address which was used to set a precedent for histories entanglements with war, attempting to prevent America from entanglements with foreign conflict. Tied into that it also went against the Monroe Doctrine specifically avoiding conflicts with monarchs such as in Asia and Europe and the support of their power. In a separate document Lodge also spoke on how America should be a power in uniting the nations in an attempt to bring peace.
