Senators opposed joining the League of Nations in 1919 because of foreign policies, like the monroe doctrine, and washington's farewell address. They didn't want to be pulled into another conflict after the war. Immigration was another reason, that america should take care of itself before others. They didn't want to lose power to other nations.

Senators opposed the joining the League of Nations 1919 because they did not want to disrespect Washington's Farewell Address meaning that they did want to get mixed up in foreign affairs. They did not want to get mixed up into anymore foreign conflict after the war was over. Another reason senators did not want to sign it was immigration and America needed to handle their business before anyone else's.

Senators opposed joining the League of Nations, because they did not want foreign figures influencing their laws and policies. They also did not want the League to have too much power, but they did want to United States to continue being the world police. If the League was to be created the reign of the US world police would be ended.

Senators opposed joining the League of Nations because it violates U.S. policies and goes against U.S. morals which had been established previously. It would also infringe upon U.S. privacy. Document A states that joining the League and supporting the Treaty of Versailles would go against Washington's farewell address warning of alliances, as well as violate the Monroe Doctrine's views on U.S. protection of the western hemisphere from European influence. Further, it would allow Europe an opinion in the affairs of the United States which would depend conflict between citizens and decrease privacy. (Doc A & E) This would eventually end U.S. isolationism ideals because ties would exist drawing the United States into any and all European conflict in the future.

Senators opposed joining the League of Nations because it would cause immigration regulations to change. America would have to allow more of an "open door policy." This would also allow for European countries to be more involved in American affairs. European countries would gain more power and would now have a say in what occurs. Lastly, supporting this would lead to America going back on the Washington Policy and the Monroe Doctrine. DOC A states, "There is no need of arguing whether there is to be . . . force behind this league. It is
there in article 10 absolutely and entirely by the mere fact of these guaranties." They felt that not supporting the League would benefit the country as a whole and would preserve the peace in America.

We believe that the reasons the Senators opposed joining the League of Nations are as follows. Joining the League went against Washington's farewell address which was used to set a precedent for histories entanglements with war, attempting to prevent America from entanglements with foreign conflict. Tied into that it also went against the Monroe Doctrine specifically avoiding conflicts with monarchs such as in Asia and Europe and the support of their power. In a separate document Lodge also spoke on how America should be a power in uniting the nations in an attempt to bring peace. Rather than getting involved in international disputes we should try to solve them.
