It is true that there are huts only in rural areas but there are huge urban centers growing out throughout the entire continent. Africa is growing depending on its development and economic growth. We have to gradually change people’s point of views that Africa is a great continent with a growing economy for people to live.

Sarina

This story was when my family and I visited Disneyland. As usual, we were standing in line, waiting for tickets when a staff member asked us where we lived just for small talks. We immediately replied, "We live in Africa.". When we said that, there was this strange look on his face which he hadn't had before he asked us the question. (We are from India, but my family and I have lived in Africa for the majority of our lives, which is why we usually say we live/from Africa.) We knew "that" look on his face because whenever we say "we live in Africa" we would get the same reactions almost all the time. I think he changed his perception of what we are, before even knowing us, and just by where we lived. In my opinion, that means where you live can change how people perceive you as, which is very stereotypical.

- Aaniya

This is a stereotype, justifying racism.

I think that since Africa may not be the most developed continent, its citizens may be living not the greatest life financially. In the years of being in Africa, I've seen that they find their own ways of making things work out. For example: Let's take transportation, a person wants to be at certain place at a certain time but they're running late. There are three options: the public transportation which is the bus, taxi's, or sitting behind a person who's riding a bike. They would take the bike because it’s the fastest. I think when hearing about this it may be shocking but that’s how people live over here. Africans help Africans out. Like I said they find their own ways of making things work out. The government has provided public transportation, but people have made a living by using a bike to provide transportation. Africa is home, Africa is different, people should start admiring how gifted it is.

- Aaniya

It made the movie realistic.
Sadly though, most movies I've seen stereotype Africa as a really underdeveloped continent, or only focus on the natural aspects of the country (animals, plants). I think there should be more movies showing Africans in different social classes, so that the world can have a more realistic view of the continent.

However, I something I have noticed, is that the non-African world just really doesn't know that there is more to the continent. I remember sending my friend a picture of a nice place here in Kinshasa, and she was shocked. It's because she had a certain view of the continent already that was formed by all the stereotypes that exist about the continent.

I also think that quite a few people are very fond and proud of they're culture (which they have every right to be) and that they know of all the problems they are facing and how other countries and places are different from them.

One stereotype that I have seen a lot is that Africa is one country that only has one type of culture. Africa is a vast continent that encompasses so many different regions, history, and culture. Western Africa has developed in a different way compared to Eastern or Central Africa. Also, if you are using the internet, or live in a somewhat developed place, people automatically think you live in South Africa, which is weird, as Northern Africa can also be counted as being as developed as South Africa.
-Joyce K

Most movies that portray Africa always portray it as some land that isn't developed. It portrays Africa as a people that is still a hunter-gatherer civilization, even though we have technology, houses, etc. In much more recent movies, I feel like directors have started to focus on the fact that Africa is developed, but still retains a lot of natural beauty among its land

Africa is mostly portrayed as a "damsel in distress" The news is always showing villages, people in horrid work conditions, or malnourished people. Yes, that happens in Africa, but it also happens in Asia, and South America, but it doesn't get as targeted as in Africa. In international news, political elections are barely shown, making people think that Africa's countries have no centralized government. The best news report cite that I've seen internationally about Africa is France 24, as they also highlight the good things happening in Africa currently.

When I used to study in the United States of America, they barely ever talked about other things than ancient civilization or American History. The only "African" history I can remember is the Egyptian Empire and the colonization of Africa, but even that was a very brief unit that encompassed other ancient civilizations such as Mesopotamia, and Greece. The colonization of Africa was only kind of used as a springboard to talk about slavery and the mass exportation of people in the West.

I feel like Africa to many Africans seems like a place that you need t get out of. Many people have dreams of going to developed countries and leaving, thinking that they'll make more money in Europe or America. Yes, there are are Africans that love their cultures, but there is this culture of, "if we leave, life will be better," even though, we could improve Africa as it is.
