Implantable pacemakers and defibrillators generate electrical impulses that deliver electricity through electrodes to the heart causing it to contract. This enables the heart to pump blood into the body; it can also prevent or correct the arrhythmia. Since this technology is vital to maintaining the patient's life, it is important to monitor the battery longevity, vital tracking, and transmission success history. Typically, this type of monitoring requires a bedside monitor to transmit data to the physician to review and the patients had no way to see the data.

Now with this new technology, Bluetooth-enable implantable pacemakers use a smartphone-connected app and the pacemaker has the ability to communicate directly with the app securely. The patient can see the device information, transmission success history, battery longevity, and physical activity information. This brings more patient engagement and increased compliance with the patient's monitoring (Cleveland Clinic, 2021.)

Using these Bluetooth-enabled implantable pacemakers is a step into the future of medical technologies. There has been an increase in individuals over the age of 65 that have a smartphone. In the U.S., 62% of elderly patients use smartphones for health-related questions (Roberts & Elrefai, n.d.). I feel that this new ability for the patient to be able to track their own data about their implantable heart device will help increase compliance with follow-ups in cardiac clinics. The patient is more likely to have their phone with them and be able to send data to the provider when an cardiac event occurs compared to having to hook up to remote monitoring through a bedside monitor in their house.

The downside to using this type of technology can be that a majority of patients with pacemakers are greater than 65 years old. This elderly population was not raised with technology such as smartphone. Many patients may not understand or know how to sufficiently use the application or know how it works. This can be remedied by having a caregiver who is more competent in technology to help care for the patient.

Overall, I believe that this application can help patients be more involved in their care and increase compliance with follow-ups, especially if they do not live near their provider. Also, I feel that it is easier to use an application on a phone then it is to use a bedside monitor or to go to a doctors office to interrogate the pacemaker.

Using Strengths

My team:
1. Carter- Communication
One of my weaknesses is drawing people in and entertaining people. I need a person who can tell a story and use their charisma to draw the people in to pay attention.
2. Emily- Empathy
Having a person on my team that can be attuned to sense others' feelings is vital to team cohesiveness. Typically, I tend to make decisions based on the facts so that a decision can be effective and efficient. Sometimes, it is important to factor in feelings into the approach so people are more likely to buy into the product or situation.
3. Sheila- Strategic
Having a team member who can see the project or company projection is important to future growth. Recognizing patterns and issues and being able to make a strategic plan can avoid many problems in the future.
4. William- Woo
Personally, I am an introvert and lose energy when I am around groups of people. I do enjoy meeting new people at certain times but it isn't a strength of mine. Having someone talented in meeting new people and making connections is important to team building and customer acquisitions.
5. Daniel- Discipline
I need someone on my team that is very organized and able to break down projects into smaller tasks to accomplish them. I am a very organized person but in order to be more efficient, I would have someone who is able to plan and promote routines and consistency in the workplace.

My Top five Strengths:
1. Learner
One of my strengths is always striving to do the best I can with the wisdom and knowledge that I have. Therefore, I am constantly trying to learn to improve and grow to become a better nurse and leader.
2. Restorative
I am very practical and analytical in most of my decision-making. I tend to leave emotions out of decision-making so that we can be efficient and effective. This leads to forward movement and improvement in areas that can be fixed.
3. Individualization
I find it enjoyable to motivate and encourage others. I hold a high standard for myself and others to perform at their best. I do try and teach knowledge or wisdom I have learned from my experiences so that others can glean from my successes or even my failures.
4. Responsibility
One of my core values is being honest. When I say I am going to do something, I do it. If I am unable to complete the task, I communicate that it wasn't done. This can ensure effective communication in patient care and in making sure all parts of projects are completed.
5. Context
I feel that if we do not review what we have done in the past; we may be destined to repeat it in the future. Looking back at data or past experiences is very important to gain wisdom to be applied from the successes and failures.
