Last year's lottery process was a mess and completely diminishes the idea of a magnet or speciality school. For instance students with 100 latenesses, yes this is possible, and nearly 60 absences shouldn't be selected for a speciality spot that they will barely fill. As a former special education teacher, I definitely want to see inclusion of special students, but if a school is an academic focus and the student can't evaluate and analyze the content, it's not the place for them. We shouldn't be sending our students into programs that don't fit their needs just to say we "included them." However, teachers have the most knowledge about their students so after the selections have been made and seats are sitting open, teachers should be able to write rebuttals for students. If they are regulated by zip code, that would be fine, so that the students who are picked up are diverse that's fine. There should never be empty seats at our most elite schools. A students shouldn't be cut and dry not allowed to acceptance because of 10 absences when maybe they lost their house, a sibling, or caregiver that year.
