I have middle school students write to their high school penpals using a "postcard". They introduce themselves including name, ages, how they are doing, items & colors they like and don't like. They also include images of themselves on the other side.

I use a combination of low risk and higher risk experiences for learners. Low risk builds their confidence. Higher risk allows me, as the instructor, to get a better read and formatively assess individual learners.

In a travel unit that I have, I allow students to create their own trip. This project allows pupils to choose what they want to do on this trip. Students get to explore their own interests such as a hunting trip, a historic trip, or a trip focusing on relaxation. This gives flexibility in how students can engage in the task.

At the beginning of each class session, I share a scale of 9 animals representing different emotions and ask students to share which one represents how they feel today. Then, they share a bit about their state with a partner and possibly as a full class.

Every Friday my students play board games in Spanish so they practice what they have learned that week. They have fun and they are motivated to learn more so they get to play.
