In a lot of cultures and societies women don't have the same respect, appreciation, or access to power that men do. It's hard for women to put themselves in areas that are predominantly male, especially when women are just starting to gain respect and equality. Kluane mentions how women in her tribe were respected/equal to men and how there's matriarch's that have power within the Dakl'aweidi tribe. Because this isn't the same for every society and nation, I think a lot of women have difficulty putting themselves out there for positions of power. When a lot of cultures are biased towards men it's difficult for women to gain the respect necessary to be in powerful positions. 

2. For me, being a leader means being the person that voices the thoughts of the people outloud. It's like one spokesperson for a whole group of people. I personally don't see being a leader as having one person in control or using their power for their own interests. I think leaders should rather listen to and involve the people that they lead and try to benefit everyone. 

3. One of the biggest lessons I took away is that not every society has treated women poorly or unequal. We almost always learn about societies where women were treated badly, were seen as lesser than men, and weren't given positions of power. Kluane's emphasis on women involvement and matriarch's in her tribe's history really showed that not every society treated women the same. Like the Dakl'aweidi women who went through the opening in the glacier, I think it's important for me and other women to make our own paths in society and be brave enough to do things we typically wouldn't.

For centuries, they told us to be quiet, kind, and likeable.
