Christopher Columbus was the first person to discover America...or was he? Yes, this post is going to be about the Native Americans and the Europeans who basically took the land from them and claimed it as theirs.

So in the 1200's, a European named Marco Polo and his father went out to explore East Asia and India. Seventeen years later, he returned and everyone wanted to know his story. A writer helped him write a book, which inspired many people to find a quicker way to get there. One of those people was named Christopher Columbus.

Since nobody knew what was to the west, Columbus decided to sail there. Eventually, he got the King and Queen of Spain to sponsor his trip to the west, in hopes of him bringing back gold and riches. After he headed west, it took months and months for him and his crew to finally reach land.

When they arrived in America, the crew thought they were in the Indies, which is what they called Asia and India.

Here is a video that sums this up: https://youtu.be/lPDOhrw6t7o
So when they arrived in the Americas, they met these people there hat they thought were Indians, but they were actually native to America. Columbus and his crew didn't treat them so well. The natives spoke a foreign language, but the crew taught them English. Although the natives treated them quite nicely, the Europeans robed them of their land and kept them as slaves.

Slavery

So in the last paragraph, I mentioned that the natives were kept as slaves. They kept them as slaves until most died out or dissapeared. After that, they sailed to Africa where Africans sold their own people to them as indentured servants. Indentured servants worked for about three or four years until they were given a segment of land, some money, and some seeds for farming. But what they then realized was that slaves were more efficient because they wouldn't lose any land or money. So they turned the indentured servants into slaves, which let them keep their land. It also let them keep their extra seeds and cash, which saved them quite a bit of money. Later in history, slavery was abolished.

So after the Europeans settled in Jamestown, they started to grow "cash crops", crops that are sold for a high price. One of the main crops they grew was tobacco, which they sold to Europe. If it wasn't for tobacco, America wouldn't exist today. That is because the Jamestown settlers sold tobacco to get most of their money. That is how they got rich and grew. They then went on to expand their colony and grew into the America we all know of today. England had a lot of addicts, so they bought a lot.

The starving time was a period of time when people from Jamestown didn't have much food. They were desperate, so they ate anything they thought was edible, including horses, tools, even people. One time, this guy cooked up his wife and ate her. The starving time ended when they started trading with natives for food. Here's a strange but good video to sum this up:https://youtu.be/VNMcbr4kUTw
