         <description><![CDATA[<p><strong>Objective:</strong> Students will understand fractions as parts of a whole by creating and labeling their own fraction pizzas.</p><p><strong>Materials:</strong></p><ul><li><p>Construction paper or printed pizza templates</p></li><li><p>Scissors</p></li><li><p>Crayons/markers</p></li><li><p>Small paper plates (optional)</p></li><li><p>Fraction labels (½, ⅓, ¼, etc.)</p></li></ul><p><strong>Instructions:</strong></p><ol><li><p><strong>Introduce the Concept</strong> – Read a book like <em>Give Me Half!</em> by Stuart J. Murphy, which explains fractions in a simple way. Ask questions like:</p><ul><li><p><em>What does "half" mean?</em></p></li><li><p><em>If we share a pizza with three people, how many equal parts do we need?</em></p></li></ul></li><li><p><strong>Create Fraction Pizzas</strong> – Give each student a paper pizza circle and have them cut it into equal slices (e.g., 2, 3, 4, 6, or 8 pieces).</p></li><li><p><strong>Label and Color</strong> – Students label each slice with the correct fraction (e.g., ¼ for four slices) and decorate their pizza with toppings.</p></li><li><p><strong>Math Talk Discussion</strong> – Ask students:</p><ul><li><p><em>Which pizza has bigger slices: one cut into halves or one cut into fourths?</em></p></li><li><p><em>If you eat 2 out of 4 slices, what fraction of the pizza is left?</em></p></li></ul></li><li><p><strong>Bonus Game: Fraction Swap</strong> – Have students trade slices with their classmates to form new pizzas and discuss what fractions they created.</p></li></ol>]]></description>
