It is the fruit of the hardwork of two brothers Orville and Wilbur Wright. 
Yes, it wasn't a very easy task. Especially in that time when people believed that touching the sky is just fantasy.

Wilbur was injured in an accident in an ice hockey game and because of that he started staying at home, helping his mother. Orville, on the other hand was optimistic. In 1889 Orville opened a printing press and requested Wilbur to join him.
Capitalizing on the national bicycle craze, they opened a cycle repair and sales shop in December 1892. And in 1896, they began manufacturing their own brand.
In early and mid 1980's they read about and saw pictures in magazines of Karl Wilhelm Otto Lilienthal, also known as the "flying man" who was the first person to make well-documented, repeated, successful flights with gliders.
In 1896, Lilienthal died in the plunge of his glide. This remained in their minds. His death marked the point where their serious interest in research began.

The death of another aeronaut Percy Pilcher in a hang gliding crash in 1899, reinforced their opinion that a reliable method of pilot control was the key to successful and safe flight.
The three major problems according to them were
1. wings
2. engines
3. control

They pondered on how to balance the plane and observed birds. They found that birds changed the angles of the end of their wings and tried to make something similar. All the calculations set, all parts fixed, wing-warping installed but somehow, Wilbur incorrectly believed that a tail was not necessary. As a result their first two gliders did not have a tail! Doesn't it seem funny? I cant imagine an airplane like that.
