Based on what you heard Serravallo say, what is formative assessment?

From what Servallo said in the podcast, the conclusion made is that a formative assessment is a way to test a child’s knowledge to gauge where their learning is at, in that particular moment. It does not necessarily need to be a “test” but it needs to show teachers what students already know, and what they need to learn. These assessments are more for the teachers to improve their teaching and mold their instruction around their students to help them achieve their highest learning potential.

What are 3 formative assessment choices?

One formative assessment choice is matching what you want students to do. This could be to ask students to answer questions as they read a whole book. The second formative assessment choice is evaluating them so the teacher can plan instruction. Teachers should assess when they have the time and interest in evaluating that assessment that will ultimately lead to teaching. The third formative assessment choice is assessments that do not take up too much instruction time. Choose something as simple as looking at the way they read or what they write during a stop and jot.

And why would you use each?

Piecing these aspects of formative assessment together will help create a meaningful check of where our students are at and where we want our future instruction to go. Having formative assessments before, during, and after reading will help us educators, as well as the students themselves, figure out what they know, what they want to know, and what they have learned. It’s all about getting to know each students’ goals, interests, and where he or she has made progress throughout the year. A great way to do this, as mentioned in the article, is to have a list of your students and take 5-10 minute increments to observe the various behaviors they present while reading. From there, one can figure out the behavior and what they plan to do to help increase or decrease it.

How is this similar or different from what you have learned in other classes?

This is similar to what we have learned in EDUC 420/440. In those classes we learned that you need to assess your students to figure out how to plan for next instruction. Something different that we related to in this particular podcast, was the Friday Night Lights metaphor. It was very interesting to think about teachers as the football coach. We liked that she related it taking videos of the players and never watching them. They need to be watched by the coach in order for the coach to make constructive changes for the better. That is the same thing with teachers and their assessments. They need to be analyzed and used to best help the students thrive.
