How to access databases:

Go to Kennedy's homepage (kenn.cr.k12.ia.us)

Hover over the "Academics" tab

Click on Library Home

Select your database

Username: 1053kenn
Password: aea10

After logging into EBSCO:

Click on High School Magazine Collection

Check “Select All” Databases to continue

Or, click on the links above.

When in EBSCO or other databases, what do I always need to make sure to do?

You can do a basic search or an advanced search. Things to note about advanced searching:

You can toggle the search functions to include AND (this will make the database search things together), OR, or NOT (if you choose NOT the database will exclude articles that include the phrase you listed).

Click on "full text" after I search (this is so important - if you don't click this you may not be able to access the article!)

If you want to do a pre-AP or challenge option, then click on peer review! This is optional.

Peer review ensures the source has been checked and vetted by professionals in the field. It's an easy way to ensure that your research is reliable and valid

Also on the left side, you can change the date range. This will have the database pull articles only from the selected range you want

Don't forget to have the database email the article to you! In EBSCO, this is on the right side. Enter your email on the side. This is a super easy way to keep track of the articles.

Have the database CITE THE ARTICLE for you! It's so easy! And it will save you a ton of time. To do this in EBSCO:

On the right hand side, click CITE. Scroll to the MLA

Save the article in a few different ways:

Through emailing it to yourself

Downloading and saving the article

Adding the article to your Google Drive.

Include the permalink. This will be important when you return to your research. What is a permalink you ask? A permalink is a permanent link to the article that you can access without having to log into the database. To get the permalink, click on the side button that says "Permalink." Copy the link that appears when you click Permalink NOT the URL. The URL doesn't always take you back to the article. Make sure you know the difference.

If I can’t find what I want, what should I do?

If you even have one good article, click on the blue "subject" terms. This will take you to other articles EBSCO has categorized as helpful.

If you have a good article, check the citations! You might find another article title to search for in EBSCO

Switch up the search terms. Use “Advanced” Search. Filter out using NOT and AND/OR

Add in more specific terms in advanced.

Look at other articles you found and click on their suggested search terms.

Grab a reference from an article you found!

If you are getting nothing with peer review button selected, you can unselect, but you will need to demonstrate how each article is credible on your own

Try Google Scholar: scholar.google.com. This is for more advanced searches, but is a resource

What should I consider before choosing a source?

Read the abstract. Check the date.

Generally check the credibility. Is the author listed? Is the source credible? Are there experts, facts, and other reliable information cited?
