Education: I received my secondary education at the gymnasium in Oppeln. I also studied and earned my medical degree at the University of Breslau in 1870.

Work: I Worked in Breslau at Allerheiligen Hospital as an assistant to an ophthalmology professor Ostrid Foerster for 6 months. Then after working as an army surgeon for a while I eventually returned to the hospital and worked in the psychiatric department under Professor Heinrich Neumann, whom of which had later sent me off to Vienna for 6 months to study with neuropathologist Theodor Meynert, who had a great influence on my career from that point forward.

Werneckie’s Encephalopathy: The presence of neurological symptoms caused by biochemical lesions of the central nervous system after exhaustion of B-vitamin reserves, in particular Thiamine.

Inspired by a patient I studied back in 1873 who had suffered a stroke, I discovered from my research after he died that there was a lesion in the rear parietal/temporal region of the patient's left brain hemisphere.
