Without them, our cities and neighborhoods would be safe. The tough gun laws would offer protection to our fellow citizens and no ones' life would be on the line. Based on the text from the Newsela article, "PRO/CON Is it Time To Pass Tough Gun Control Laws?'' the author claims, " I enjoyed hunting and shooting for sport, but there comes a time when you must think beyond yourself and the insulation of your community about something larger." From his experience he has grown up with guns, but felt no safety among others. He has also claimed, " If all residents of a community or country are not free from the terror of gun violence, then the romanticized freedom of gun ownership is a false freedom."
Having a gun can threaten peoples' lives and put them in danger. Less deaths would occur and the rate of crimes would decrease heavily. However, I highly disagree with this claim. According to ProCon.org's  Should More Gun Control Laws Be Enacted?, it states that "Of the 29,618,300 violent crimes committed between 2007 and 2011, 0.79% of victims (235,700) protected themselves with a threat of use or use of a firearm...." This shows that guns are rarely used for self defense, and are usually just used for crimes, bringing harm and fear to others. In 2010 there had only been 230 "justifiable homicides", which a citizen used a firearm to defend themselves against a felon. In addition, many people also resort to using a firearm as a self-annihilation (Padlet filtered out the the more commonly used word) technique, which is the exactly opposite of self-defense. Bullets ricocheted off the wall, her mind swimming with fear. Her breathing was ragged, as she forced her legs to carry her to safety, to let him see her family again. 'Come on..come on..'. Her muscles screamed in utter protest, as she wildly looked about, tears pooling at the edge of her eyes as he heard the slow and steady steps of the shooter. A shot whistled through the corridor, ripping through her and lodging into her shoulder as she let loose an agonized scream. Her left arm hung uselessly as she dragged himself across the floor, leaving a trail of blood. This is what could be happening in over 243,800 thousand schools across the U.S. The Florida School shooting was only just one prime example of how ineffective our gun control laws are.

The shooter was clad in black, her hand gripped tightly on her weapon. He raised it and looked the cornered student in the eye, an unhinged gleam in his eye.
His finger pulled the trigger and-
'Sorry mom..I won't be coming home for dinner.' 
- the muzzle flashed and blood painted the walls. This student is one of the victims of our romanticized system of true gun control. Without guns flooding the streets, we'd all be much safer. Just how many people would carry a weapon on their person to prevent an armed attack?
